John, you have 7 companies, and you have written over 84 books, what does your process for writing a book look like…what is step 1 for you?

  1. Yes, yes, yes and yes! Thrivetime Nation on today’s show we are interviewing the man that most business leaders consider to be the greatest of all-time in the world of next-level leadership. After as the senior pastor of Skyline Church in California for 14 years, he burst onto the scene as the New York Time best-selling selling author of 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.
  2. Throughout his epic career, he has been the speaker of choice for a massive number of fortune 500 companies and many of the world’s most successful organizations including The NCAA, the NBA, the NFL, the United States Military Academy. 
  3. When he wasn’t outspeaking to thousands Mr. Maxwell has found a way to become prolific with the pen as the writer of over 30 books which have sold millions of copies throughout the world. Ladies and Gentlemen, he’s the leadership author who expanded my thinking and whose books have dramatically increased the size of my wallet and my influence. John Maxwell, welcome onto the Thrivetime Show for our second interview! How are you sir!??
  4. How did you transition so smoothly from ministry to leadership expert and best-selling author?
  5. John Maxwell, you so graciously sent me an “Advanced Reader’s Copy” of your newest book, The Leader’s Greatest Return – Attracting, Developing and Multiplying Leaders…what first inspired you to write this book?
  6. By default where are most business leaders getting it wrong when it comes to Attracting, Developing and Multiplying Leaders?
    1. 7:30 – Some leaders don’t want other leaders around them
    2. Developing leaders is not easy
  7. Chapter 1 of your book is about Identifying Leaders: Find Them So You Can Develop Them…what can readers expect to find in this chapter?

  11. Chapter 2 of your book is titled “Attracting Leaders – Invite Them to the Leadership Table.” What does the process of attracting leaders look like?
  12. John, so many business owners struggle to motivate their people and their leaders, what practical advice would you have for our listeners out there about how to sustainably motivate their people?
  13. John, Chapter 8 of your new book The Leader’s Greatest Return – Attracting, Developing and Multiplying Leaders is all about Mentoring Leaders: Coach Them to the Next Level…what does the process of coaching up your leaders look like on a daily basis?
  14. To encourage our listeners who have been struggling to gain traction…When did you first feel like you were truly beginning to gain traction with your career?
  15. I’ve heard you say that the “Power of Intentional Living” is one of the most powerful books that you have written. I would love for you to share with our listeners why you are so passionate about that book.

    2. 46:30 – Every distraction keeps a person from having traction. Traction is to pull in to a cause. Distraction is to pull away from a cause. When I see people trying to talk to me and looking at their phone….

 

John Maxwell, you have said that we all have “uphill hopes” and “downhill habits.” What do you mean by this?

Every day John Maxwell does the following things:

  1. 1st – Read
  2. 2nd – Think
  3. 3rd – Filing
  4. 4th – Ask Question
  5. 5th – Write

 

When do you carve out the time to write your books?

  1. Write in hotel rooms
  2. Write using a legal pad
  3. He writes in the morning – 4:00 AM to 5:00 AM
  4. Nobody wants to talk to you at:
    1. 4:00 AM to 5:00 AM
    2. 12:00 AM to 3:00 PM

 

Where are you physically located when writing a book?

  1. What technology do you use to help you write your books in terms of programs?
  2. How many times do you typically have to edit a book before you are happy with it and it’s ready to be bought and sold around the world?
  3. Cory Minter – How do you set your limits with your schedule?
  4. Cory Minter – At this point in your life, who do you most want to help do what?
    1. 37:40 – I develop leaders who magnify
  5. Cory Minter – You have moved over into the business world, but you are a man of Faith.  What is the best advice that you would like to share with other businessmen who are also strong in their faith, but they work in a secular world?

John C. Maxwell

John Calvin Maxwell is a multiple-time New York Times best-selling author, inspirational and leadership speaker, and a pastor who has written over 30 books including the iconic leadership and business titles: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, Intentional Living: Choosing a Life That Matters, Center Street and The 360° Leader. John Maxwell who was born in 1947 has written and sold millions of copies of his books. 

Personal life

John Maxwell grew up in the midwestern city of Garden City, Michigan.  was born in Garden City. Raised as a devout evangelical Christian, John chose to follow in his father’s footsteps and start a career in ministry. John earned his bachelor’s degree from Circleville Bible College in the year 1969 and he earned a Master of Divinity from Azusa Pacific University. John then chose to go on and to gain even more formal education by earning his Doctor of Ministry degree from the Fuller Theological Seminary. Today, John C. Maxwell currently lives in southern Florida with his wife, Margaret. John is an ordained minister with the Wesleyan Church. 

Career

Ever since the early 1970’s, there have been churches all over Indiana, Ohio, Florida, and California led by John Maxwell. Maxwell served as the senior pastor for Skyline Church from 1980 to 1995. He left Skyline Church to fully apply himself as a speaker and a writer. Maxwell returned to the world of ministry in the year 2004 when he began serving Christ Fellowship of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Currently he is serving at Christ Fellowship as one of their teaching pastors. In 2008, he started serving the famous Crystal Cathedral as guest pastor. Maxwell had a mentor named Robert H. Schuller and Robert had many notable evangelical preachers speak at his megachurch after Robert A. Schuller, his son, retired as the senior pastor back in 2008. John Maxwell came back, multiple times, to Crystal Cathedral and each one of the messages that he delivered was broadcasted on the Hour of Power program.

Maxwell has founded many organizations on top of being a leadership expert, writer, and public speaker. Some of those organizations include INJOY, The John Maxwell Team, Maximum Impact, ISS, the leadership enhancing program, that works with companies across the world, EQUIP. This specific program helps leaders over 80 nations across the world. They have a mission that they are heavily committed to and that is, “to see effective Christian leaders fulfill the Great Commission in every nation”. 

Every single year, John Maxwell speaks to many Fortune 500 businesses, he speaks with international government heads, and even such organizations as the West Point U.S. Military Academy. Maxwell also speaks to organizations such as the National Football League. He does not limit himself to only speaking, Maxwell also has written many books including a New York Times, Business Week, and Wall Street Journal best-selling titles. He has also been one of 25 authors who have entered Amazon.com’s tenth anniversary Hall of Fame. Maxwell has three titles that have each sold well over one million copies.

If you travel to Wesleyan University in Indiana, you can find a building named after John Maxwell and his family. Because of John’s impact on the Wesleyan Church, they have created the Maxwell Center for Business and Leadership. John was inducted into the Indiana Wesleyan University Society of World Changers back in 2015 where he received his honorary doctorate degree.

Recently, in 2010, John Maxwell was the keynote speaker at National Agents Alliance Leadership Conference and has also been the keynote speaker many times in the past. He has also been the keynote speaker for other conferences including the Symmetry Financial Group’s National Conference back in February of 2018. Maxwell was awarded the Golded Gavel by Toastmasters International back in 2012 

Maxwell took a team down to Guatemala in July 2013 and was able to train over 24,000 leaders. Many people including Randy Stroman attended the week long leadership growth sessions.

Maxwell was made the Number One Leadership and Management Expert in the entire world in May of 2014 by Inc. Magazine.
