In order to say yes to your best and to your ultimate success, you have to learn to say no and to say no often. Clay Clark breaks down why you must block negative people from your social media, from your email inbox, and from your phone. He goes on to explain why we must learn to focus only on what we can control.
FUN FACT – Doors that lock and walls are not unethical.
Wall #1 – Block negative people on social media
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “We need to re-create boundaries. When you carry a digital gadget that creates a virtual link to the office, you need to create a virtual boundary that didn’t exist before.” – Daniel Goleman (Best-selling author of Emotional Intelligence)
FUN FACT – “The study reported that the typical smartphone owner interacts with his or her phone an average of 85 times per day.” – https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-athletes-way/201706/are-smartphones-making-us-stupid
Wall #2 – Block negative people from in your e-mail inbox
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20
Wall #3 – Block negative people from your phone
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “Watch out for the joy-stealers: gossip, criticism, complaining, faultfinding, and a negative, judgmental attitude.” – Joyce Meyer (A best-selling author and Charismatic Christian speaker and the president of Joyce Meyer Ministries.)
Wall #4 – Block negative music from your ears
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “But you are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn’t making you stronger, they’re making you weaker.” – Tim Ferriss (New York Times best-selling author and early stage investor in Evernote, Facebook, Twitter and Uber)
Wall #5 – Block negative politics from your ears and eyes
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dream. Those that don’t increase you will eventually decrease you. Consider this: Never receive counsel from unproductive people. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person. Don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere. With some people you spend an evening: with others you invest it. Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life. Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships. If you run with wolves, you will learn how to howl. But, if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. “A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.” The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate – for the good and the bad.” – Colin Powell (During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War. Powell was the first, and so far the only, Jamaican American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first black person to serve in that position.)
Wall #6 – Blocking out anything that you can not control
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.” – Brian Tracy (Best-selling author and renowned business consultant and speaker)
AMPLE EXAMPLE – Avicii’s Death, Suicide Details Emerge
ACTION ITEM – Build your 6 walls today! Do not wait. Today is your day. Make the choice to Thrive and not just survive.
We’re talking about why you must build six walls, but Mexico doesn’t need to pay for it. A lot of times in our business podcasts culture and our society, we get all worked up about things that don’t matter. As an example, let’s say you’re listening out there today and you have a problem with the way the immigration in our country works. Let’s say you’re listening today and you have a problem with the way immigration works. You don’t like the fact that we don’t have a wall. Let’s just say for you, you believe we need a wall. Okay? Let’s say you’re listening and you say, we don’t need a wall anti wall. Either way, neither building a wall or not. Building a wall is probably the biggest issue in your life unless you live right on the Mexican border where there’s that issue, but if you’re like in Minnesota, there’s probably a lot of other issues that matter more and so I’m not saying that you should or shouldn’t build a wall, but I’m saying for your own life, you do need to build six walls today, but Mexico does not need to pay for it.
It’s not a political issue. I’ve heard td Jakes, the African American, a televangelist speak at great length of why he builds it. Are you personally lives behind a wall? The Vatican is behind a wall. You’ll see top security businesses operating behind a wall. You will notice that nuclear power plants operate behind a fence or a wall castles behind a wall. The idea is to protect things that you value, so I’m going to walk everybody through the walls and we’re going to go with wall number one, wall number one, you gotta block negative people on social media. Chuck, educate me as to why I need to build a social media wall
because that crap doesn’t matter. And the haters are all over. The trolls are in control in control. So if you’re out there just connecting with every single person, getting feedback from everybody that’s got a facebook account or a twitter account or instagram or whatever, it’s going to literally drive you crazy. Like literally it will drive you crazy. So here’s your assignment. Some examples
of things that I really try not to know, but I know because there are people at the conference that bring them up to me and I’m not mad at you because you brought up and just, I don’t want to know really. Okay. So like recently Elan Musk apparently has been having some some issues. Um, and so whether it’s, you know, whether it’s true or not, um, apparently elan musk is having some alleged personal issues that some would say are destroying his credibility as an entrepreneur or the kind of guy that’s going to make the rockets super genius. Yeah. And, and, and whether you agree with it or not, there’s some photos coming out now you kind of see who was out with. And the business podcasts point is, I don’t get into celebrity gossip, I don’t read the gossip columns to publications. And so some guy at the conference I guess was, was flipping through the boom book and he was like, are you going to quote like Ilan Musk?
I mean, do you know what he’s going through right now? Do you, are you heard what’s going on? And I, I gotta be honest with you, like, no, not before you told me because I don’t go on social media, nor do I go on nutsy and, or do I go on Fox, I just focus on growing company and regardless, whatever he does in the future, the quote that we’re teaching those principles still work, right? Another example would be like a Russell Simmons who wrote a book called life and death and who introduced America to hip hop music. Uh, as part of the me too movement. It’s come out that he apparently is not that great of a guy. And you know what? That’s okay because the book life and death is still inspired me and I still like hip hop music and he’s still helped introduce the world to it and so, but if you’re on social media, people will debate that stuff, Steve, for hours and hours and people will really debate social media.
I mean they will spend a ton of time debating it. It’s amazing how people change behind a keyboard or behind their smartphone. You know, like the things that they’ll say on there that they would never, ever, ever think about saying to your face, keyboard, warrior, but they would, you know, they do. So this is the little fun factoid for you here. The average person right now, according to psychology today, is being interrupted by their smartphone 85 times per day. Now, if you’re listening to this podcast and you’re in an inner city area, as most of you are, I don’t think it’s unethical for you to have a door to your house. I mean, if you live in a condo high rise, if you live on floor three of an apartment building, I don’t think it’s unethical to have a door. I don’t think it’s unethical to have a lock on the door, have a lock on my door and a lock on my door to my bedroom.
I don’t think it’s unethical though to put a lock on the door. Right. A lot of people don’t feel it’s unethical to block some on social media. So let me go through my facebook real quick. Let’s see if we can go on facebook and said we can find some. We need to block. Right? And we won’t mention their name. Let’s just do this fun exercise. So you’re going to get that whole unfollow move just all the time. Okay. So. And then I like to block because I kinda like to make it like. No. Yeah, there’s this currington couple. You should get rid of this scrolling through. I don’t really see. I’ve, I’ve done a really good job over the years of just blocking anybody that makes me crazy. But who writes horrible things about people you know? If you’re on, they’re just slamming people all day, every day. John, I’m going to tell you, I don’t have anything really negative today, but I, I did have a time in my life where I’d have a lot of people that would just write controversial stuff and then it was like you just would look at it daily and it just like, Oh man, not going to do it.
Yeah, I mean if you’re going through a divorce that’s, that’s a unfortunate enough, but going on wine and like airing your dirty laundry is not necessarily something that people were excited about. Fishing for sympathy like you can tell people are just and it’s just a waste of time. Just get off of there. So block negative people on social media. The next, the next wall you need to construct is you need to block out negative people in your inbox. Block negative people from your inbox. Check. Why do you want to block negative people from your email inbox? Well, you need to be using your email as a tool to help you get stuff done throughout the day, not as a main communication tool. So if it is a tool, you wanna use it efficiently and if you’ve got a bunch of people emailing you feedback or negative emails, just get them out of there. Just kidding. You don’t need to waste your time with it. I have blocked more people than I could possibly list on today’s show from my inbox and I do it at least on a daily basis because I. You just are some people that will never stop emailing. Negative burning fires, all blue page long issues. They’ll email a question mixed into a paragraph and a statement. You have no idea. They’re talking about Steve. It can get overwhelming if you let your employees or your team just email you all the time.
True. And I just looked at my facebook. You have to scroll a lot to go past all the people that I’ve looked. I mean it’s kind of like what you have to do, you know when you get. The other thing is really good with email, it’s just hitting, delete it, delete it. It’s kind of freeing. I have a certain person that emails me that I can’t block because that’s like a company thing, so I have to like get emails, but I purposely mark them as spam so every time they email me it goes to my spam and then whenever I clean out my spam, which is like maybe once a week or two, then I’ll get that email and I might respond.
The only thing I will say, I was making sure that the listeners are getting an actionable, like specific step here. I’m saying to you, this is, this is me, this is clay Clark one on one. If you have to put up with somebody and you have to get three emails, then you have to get three emails. But what I am saying is if you don’t have to get through emails, don’t get it. I used to have family members email me a joke or a story or a political something. Every day I don’t even share email with people anymore. I just. It’s like it just doesn’t end and so you’ve got to get control over your inbox. Furthermore, proverbs 13, 20, he instructs us, walk with the wise and become wise for a companion of fools suffers harm. Well, you might not be physically with people, but if you’re around them enough, they’re going to convince you that Michelle Obama is a man and that trump is the antichrist.
They will convince you that Barack Obama works directly with Satan and that, uh, Donald Trump is, is actually Satan’s righthand man, and that the Illuminati is currently in control of everything including where you ate yesterday because they now control your minds because they put a chip in your head. Well, trump and Obama obviously in cahoots. Have you met? Have you met people though like that? Who honestly are saying like, what does it even matter? I mean, all my thoughts are controlled in any way by the business podcasts mainstream media. I mean everything. I just, I mean I just, I mean, why do we even live in a house? It’s because it’s controlled by the media. Why do we even have the idea of having families? That’s all the man trying to control us, man. Telling how to think and feel. Me. I literally met a guy years ago who is to lift.
I met a guy years ago who applied for a job as a videographer and I asked him, I said, I always asking during the interviews, I asked polarizing questions because I want to see where people are at. I said, you know, what’s one thing that you believe that most of the work, most of the world does it, and this guy, he was awesome. He goes on this thesis. Here’s the deal. We right now only make decisions because we’re chasing currency, but who made the currency so I’m just tired of being a slave to the government that controls us and the rules they give us and the religion they give us and the and you start to realize like this guy is never going to work hard at a job because he’s influenced on a daily drip campaign from Illuminati.com or something. So it just. You got to take control of your inbox. The next wall that you want to build is you got to block negative people on your phone chunk. What do you gotta block negative people from your phone?
Again, this is something that you know, like clay is an expert at this. Turn the phone off when you don’t. You’re not doing business and use this as a tool. Use your phone as a tool to help you be more efficient throughout your day, but negative people are going to text. They’re gonna call. They’re going to blow you up and so you’ve got to just. There’s a feature on the on the phone where you can block certain numbers and you can literally keep them from calling you.
Okay, so let’s do the next notable quotable from Joyce Meyers. As we go into the next wall, we should. Well Joyce Meyers, bestselling author of charismatic Christian Speaker. What does she have to say? Jump. Watch out for the day.
Joy, stealers, gossip, criticism, complaining fault finding and negative, judgmental attitude.
Again, it’s possible to find something negative about everything and there’s people that that’s what they do. They love to go from crisis to crisis. They want to focus on the crisis that divides us and not the things that bring us together. They love to talk about the things that divide us and you got to be careful. So. Well, number three, you got to block negative people from your phone, right? Well, number four, you got to block block negative music from your ears. Now, negative music. What does negative music? There is a lot of others. A lot of people out there. Uh, we’ll call them musicians and a lot of them are very solid people, but I’m going to go to the top 40 billboard right now and I’m going to read off the songs and I’m going to read off who I suggest you would block.
All right? So you have drake. He has a song called in my feelings. You Got Maroon five, girls like you, you get Cardi B. I like, you got post Malone better now you’ve got lucid dreams. You’ve got sicko mode by Travis Scott. You’ve got um, bu up by Lma. You’ve got taste by tig, uh, featuring offset. You’ve got no brainer by DJ cowed. What are the top 10? And I really think the production of drake is, is pretty good, but I really don’t see any reason why you’d want to, why you’d want to feed your mind anything in the top 10 right now because the songs are just absolute garbage. I mean, they are absolutely garbage. They, they, they have no meaning. That’s positive. So as an example, let’s just say, let’s say chuck psychologists know on a subconscious level that whatever you feed your mind will begin to manifest itself through actions.
Okay? So this is what. These are the lyrics from a no brainer with Justin bieber and Dj Khaled. It says, don’t look rich. I ain’t got no chain. Not on the list. I ain’t got no name but me in this B, b, I’m not lame. Be Standing for it. Rhymes with itch. I’m not no lame. I keep it Benjamin Franklin. I’m not going to change a lot of these hoes is messy now. Hose meaning prostitutes or the way he talks about women. Hmm. A lot of these hoses messy. I just want you and your bestie. That means he wants to have a menage a trois. He have sex with one girl and another girl simultaneously. I don’t. I don’t got the answer for whenever you said I don’t. I, I don’t got the answer for whenever you text me. It’s multiple choice and they all went to testimony. She chew, chew, chew, chew the squad. She trying to choose me. Between Justin claw and Ashad, she told me that she loved that I make music for God.
I told her I would love to see that and he explains her body part. Applaud. Oh my gosh. So what he’s saying is he would like to see her vagina applaud after he writes. Let me, let me read the lyrics. He says, she told me that she loved me because I make my music for God. I told her that I’d like to have her vagina applaud. That is what is actually in the song. No brainer by Justin Bieber. That’s in the. You tell me Justin Bieber’s turning for Christ. No Way. We’re all now dumber for know. Everybody out there says, oh, Justin Bieber, not Justin Bieber is a freaking moron. He’s a freaking idiot. That guy has all the money in the world, all the resources in the world. He could be making songs for good, but instead he’s writing a song where he’s talking about she loves me because I’m writing songs for God, but I want to see her vagina applaud.
That’s impressive, Justin. Wow. Wow. Well, but it rhymed, right? But we somehow allow them into our life because they can sing well. There’s a lot of other people who aren’t directly from hell that could sing well. I don’t need to have a demon in my house just so that I can have a. someone sing. Well, there’s a lot of people who sing great. I’m just trying to tell you there is. If you feed your mind crap, you’re going to get crap. It’s just going to tell. You’re going to process the world. That’s where it’s just how it’s gonna work. You feed the subconscious mind bad stuff. It’s going to happen. Now. Next area, you get a block, negative politics from your ears and your eyes. I’m going to have Eric Shepherd a notable quotable from a guy who served in the United States military. Honorably. I’m a guy who, uh, worked as the first African American Secretary of state under President George Bush and a guy that regardless of what side of the political spectrum, you fall on a, he is a great American. Is he perfect? No, but he has a lot to say about coming from a rough background and rising to the top. It’s Colon Powell and chip. I’m going to cue up the epic music and Steve Get good immediately at those echos. You got to work on those echoes and now’s your chance. You got it. Here we go. Here we go. Chuck, right? Here we go.
The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Anytime you tolerate mediocrity and others, it increases your mediocrity and important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dream. Dream. Those that don’t increase, you will eventually decrease you. Consider this, never received counsel from an unproductive. Never discuss your problems with someone in capable of contributing to the solution because those who never succeed themselves are always the first to tell you how not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the garden when you exchange ideas with the wrong person.
I don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere with some people. You spend an evening with others you invest in. Be careful where you stopped to choir for directions along the road of life. Why is this the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships? If you run with the wolves, you’ll learn how to how, but if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses. The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associated with the good and the
final wall. Wall number six, blocking out anything you can’t control. Chop. Why is it so important that we block out anything we can’t control?
Because if you can’t take action to fix something, then you need to just get it out of your mind. If there’s something that you can’t do to fix the problem, then why waste your precious time, your energy, your mind space, your emotions
on that thing, just sample bad. Google reviews, bad itunes reviews, people saying things that aren’t true.
Reviews that disappear on you.
People writing bad comments on facebook, Justin Bieber’s songs. Uh, Justin Bieber’s newest relationship. The reason why I bring up Bieber is because I, I mean this, I know people that are actually emotionally impacted by pop culture. It’s crazy. I’ve talked to people who are like all looking down. They look down, they look sad and I’m going, what’s going on? And this actually happened. There’s one person in our office, they’re looking all sad one day and they said, Oh man, it’s just, it’s a business podcasts bummer, you know, of he died now Avicii and we’ll put a link to a vicis death. You can put an article to it. They’re a vg is a guy who is famous for doing a ton of drugs and produce. He was a famous Dj who produced electronic dance music and he’s famous for doing a lot of drugs. I mean a ton of drugs. So much to Mike. Posner wrote a song called, took a pill in a beazer to shirt to show a BGI was cool. The whole point is a vici did a ton of drugs and this girl in our office, a true story. She’s like looking down and I’m like, what happened? She goes, oh, he. He killed himself. He killed himself with a. He broke a wine bottle and then cut himself and died like he killed himself. That way we’ll make one.
The that I would hope is direct family and people who know him mourn his loss, but you don’t know him. You never did know him. Why are you adding an impact your day? Right? Like, it’s unbelievable. Or I’ll see people who watch Fox News. Oh, I love, I love the people that love to watch CNN and Fox and freak out. And they’re like, hey man, did you see that? Uh, that trump what he just said, did you, did you hear what trump just said? And I’ll go, what did trump just say? And they’ll say, he just said this. And it’s everyday he says something because he’s a headline hunter. The guy knows how to stay in the media. Trump knows how to stay in the media. People get so worked up about Kanye west side, his new song. He came out and said this, hey, by the way, do you know Kanye West? But do you know about the county wants new song? Because someone actually did tell him is one of my clients told us they were upset about it. But apparently in Kanye West, one of his news, new songs, he’s saying that he wants to have sex with Kim Kardashian and all of her sisters at the same time.
Well that’s his sister, his sister in law. And he says it and like he’s going on this rant about it and this person is like so mad and I’m not kidding. And I said, did you know, did you track your sales leads this week? Did you track it? Will know, but then they’d want to just focus on crap. That doesn’t matter. I mean literally, how much time have you spent? I mean, when did you first hear it on Fox and now you’re going to read the article or listen to the song or the whole. The whole
reason he’s saying it is because of people like you. What I was going to say, you’re getting paid, you’re getting paid. They do this and this. He’s like, I want to have sex. No, I was just thinking about while you’re talking about this, this, this is what reality TV was for awhile, right? Everybody thought it was real and then it comes, oh, these are all these scenarios are fake. This is reality. Reality. Like they’re just faking all this stuff to get people to react, to click, to listen to the song download and they’re doing
on purpose. You’re getting played by these people. Yeah, like the whole make Bruce Make Caitlin bruce again. You know, like that whole, all of it is just part of getting attention and they win. So good job as an action item for all the listeners out there, uh, despite of whether you love Bieber or Kanye or trump or anybody I brought up to them just trying to get the mind activated, giving you polarizing examples. Build six walls today. Build a wall to block out negative people on social media. Build a wall to block out negative people from your inbox, your email inbox. Build a wall today to block out negative people from your phone. Build a wall to block out negative people from your ears. Build a wall to block out negative politics from your ears and eyes and build a wall to block out anything you can’t control. Because when you do that, now you have all sorts of time available to focus on what matters. And that is the topic of you. You don’t need Mexico
to help you build a wall. This is not a political issue, but you do need to build six weeks and that is three, two, one, boom.
