Clay breaks down why the sun’s rays can only actually burn things if they are brought into focus and why your days can only produce success if they are brought into focus as well.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” – Alexander Graham Bell (The famous scientist, inventor, engineer, and innovator who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. He also founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885.)
Vanessa Clark was a high school champion cheerleader at the magnet school based in downtown Louisville, Kentucky known as Dupont Manual (http://www.dupontmanual.com/) because she focused on what mattered to her and blocked out everything else.

Our kids are becoming very good at tumbling as a result of focusing on one thing until mastery:
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.” – Steve Jobs (Co-founder of Apple and the former CEO of PIXAR)

Welcome back to another exciting edition to off the thrive time. Show the knowledge bombs edition. Now, for those of you who are just familiarizing yourself with this new format, uh, we will be releasing 10 minute or less knowledge bombs consistently based upon a something that I deeply observed during the past seven days as a business coach or in our business conferences. I see such depravity. I see such epic success. I see such a people working hard. I see so many lazy people. I see the great polarity, I see the most successful entrepreneurs ever and I meet the most dysfunctional family owned businesses I’ve ever seen in my life. Everything in between, right? And so each week I am taking note of these little teaching moments, these little epiphany’s, and I’m distilling them into 10 minute or less, a 10 minute or less a podcast that you can really grasp.
You can get a little nugget of knowledge and, and move on about your day. So Chuck, what is today’s show titled? Flipping the bird faith, family flipping and the power of focus. So here’s one thing, thrive nation, we, as we talk about faith, family, finance, fitness, friendships, fun. We talked about the f six goals. Those were talking about the f six goals. What is the point of a business? The business exists to serve you who you are, the owner, the business exists to serve you, the owner. And so for my goals, you said, well, what are your goals? Well, my goals for my faith are I like to every single day listen to td jakes and I like to watch pastor Brian Gibson, who I consider to be my pastor on line. Okay? Faith family. My goals are for my one, for my wife, my wife, to have the time, freedom and financial freedom to do what she wants to do and to nurture the relationships with our kids.
I want to homeschool our kids unless they want to go to private school at the age of 13, which one of our kids has elected to do. I want to raise turkeys. I won’t bore you with the details, but I have a raised chickens, but I have my own goals. I like everyday. In fact, I love everyday, I have designed my schedule and I love it everyday. Well, one thing my wife loves to do is my wife loves to flip. She’s a flipper and she loves to teach other kids to flip. She went, my wife wants to teach our kids to flip. She’s very into gymnastics, cheerleading, tumbling, and so I’ve seen your kids flip. You’ve seen the kids on the trampoline out there, flipping it all over the place, but my wife is obsessed with their cheerleading in a way that rivals my obsession with helping business owners at business conferences.
She is very into. So I’m putting on the show notes. I’m putting a youtube link where you can see my wife at the age of 37 flipping as recently as last weekend because she’s had five kids, but the flipping must continue and our kids go to a place called tumble smart and Levi there. Their coach is just absolutely obsessed with flipping to. Yup. And so I put a link to it on the show notes so you can see the owner of a tumble smart. Absolutely. Actually doing flipping, but job. I’m going to put it up on the big screen. I want to show it to you. Okay. I want to get your reaction to watching this watch. This is a laser show.
Here we go.
Oh, I would have broken so many bones. I mean, isn’t it amazing how high the guy can flip? It’s worth going to thrive time show.com it on podcasts and watching the business conferences show notes. It’s worth. It’s worth watching it. So you’d say, clay, what does. How does this apply to us? Well, this is one. It’s a 10 minute podcast called the. Now let’s. Here we go. Is that Levi’s? Awesome. Gymnastics. That’s great, but all right. Then.
Levi is awesome because he’s obsessed with it. I was going to say that was probably the second time he’s ever done a flip and you must find your magnificent obsessions as soon as possible in the areas of your faith, your family, your finances, your fitness, and your fun. So please read a notable quotable that hammers home the importance of focusing for the thrive nation. Yeah. This is a quotable from Alexander Graham Bell. He says, concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The Sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus job. Can you read it with more authority, more drama, more pageantry is here. We concentrate all your thoughts upon
the sun’s rays. Do not burn until Brian to a focus. Is that better?
Yeah, I mean you just gotta focus, so think about this. If you have a magnifying glass and you focus it on a leaf for a given period of time, it’ll harnessed the sun’s rays and it’ll burn the leaf. That’s true. If you’re a sick freak like me as a kid, you have your harness, the sun’s rays and like a worm, the ants and ants, and then you can actually bring the sun’s rays into focus and it burns something. If you can bring your calendar into focus and you can harness your days, you can earn something. Oh, I see what you bring your calendar into focus and you can harness the power of your days. You can earn something, but when you harness the sun’s rays and put them into focus, you can burn something. The focus focus, it stands for focus on core tasks until success.
Focus on the core tasks until success. Stop drifting. So I thought I would do chapters. I’m going to make a list of things that I said no to today. Oh Nice. And you can explain to me why I’m a bad person. Okay, so one is a guy said, hey, I want to meet with you about buying an elephant in the room franchise and I’d like for you to travel out to our office about two hours outside of Tulsa to present to the team about why I should buy one. Well that’s offensive if you aren’t willing to do that. And I said to him, Hey, by the way our process works is we have a thing called discovery day where you first you hop on a phone call, we talked to you about the business. If you’re interested, you actually would trot travel to Tulsa and you would actually go into the stores and explore the operations of the stores.
You’re going to witness the call center for three or four hours. Then you’re going to witness the actual operation of the store for three or four hours depending upon if you have to take a lunch or not. If you want to just go straight up, it’s four hours, four hours, and then at the end of that day you can ask me any rude questions and I’m going to give you a copy of the thing called the franchise disclosure document and that document is you’re required to have in your hand for 13 days before I’m allowed US allowed to sell you one that discloses the financials, the daily operations, and that’s how it works. So that’s how it works. But he knows, he knows that the guy knows that we’ve had this discussion, so I said no, and he can’t, and he’s like, well, I’m not going to buy a franchise then.
That’s cool. That’s okay because if buying a franchise requires me traveling to you, I’m not going to do it. Yeah. How scalable would that be? Right. Another example, I put it up on twitter the other day and it again, it happened again today. We have a guy who has a cannabis business. He wants us to, they have a legal marijuana dispensary and I am of the belief that my job is to magnify things. That’s what I do. I focus on your business and I grow it. That’s our company. Does we grow companies? We help magnify what you’re already doing. We burn away the limiting factors. Yes. And I don’t want to magnify anything that I don’t agree with. If you’re out there and you are a big fan of smoking pot at that, if it’s free in your state, you’re free to do that, right?
Because that’s what the law states. I’m saying to you, I don’t have thousands of buddies who smoked pot, but I’ve got dozens of people that I know who smoke pot and all of which have become lazy, disorganized, dysfunctional, overtly casual, uh, a very, um, they, they kind of just sort of giggle a lot. Uh, and there are people that have had some problems with the law and then they didn’t stop with marijuana. They actually added a few things to it. And, uh, I would say all of them except for one are drug addicts now. And so I don’t want to magnify your not driving the cannabis. That’s true. I’m going to say no to that. That means today. I said no to potentially of income per year. I said no typical client, you know, we make a 20 percent profit margin. So I said no to, you know, potentially a $3,500 a year of profit there. And then I said no to a franchise which would’ve made me, you know, if you, if you have a franchise and let’s say I make roughly two percent of what you make you. I’m saying no to maybe $20,000 a year and I do that every day. You have to in a day is not done yet. It’s right jeopardy. The next notable quotable from the CEO, the former CEO of Pixar and the cofounder of apple, Steve Jobs,
he says, people think, focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on, but that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done.
Innovation is saying no to a thousand things. My wife’s nickname is the bird, so flipping the bird is today’s topic, right? Life is serving the bird, faith, family and flipping. My kids participate in exactly one sport. It’s called cheerleading, tumbling, gymnastics. That’s what they do. Why don’t they do others parts? Don’t you want her to be balanced? No, because balance means you haven’t focused on anything, so I am just proportionately into the Patriots. I know everything about the New England patriots because that’s my one team. I followed. He does, but if I follow it, every team is part of a fantasy football league thing. I wouldn’t have a little bit about everybody but nothing about anybody, so I encourage you to ask yourself today, what do you need to focus on? And in my wife’s case, she needs to focus on flipping and because I’m married to her, I am also focused on flipping and because thrive business conferences nation, I love you more than you could possibly know. I want to encourage you to focus on flipping the bird, and now you know the rest of the story. Three, two, one. Boom.
