Learn how to make sticky and clicky viral commercials with Benton Crane, the CEO at Harmon Brothers, the creators of viral videos for the Squatty Potty, Purple, Chatbooks, and more.

The components that have to be there:

  1. Step 1 – You actually have a real product or service that solves a problem for your ideal and likely buyers are actually willing to buy
  2. Step 2 – You have to hook the users in the first five seconds of the commercial
    1. Make a surprising yet fitting introduction
  3. Step 3 – Introduce the problem – “Look I know how you feel because I have gone through this as well.”

    2. Benton Crane, for the folks out there that are not super familiar with your background, what was your life like growing up and where did you grow up?
      1. I am the CEO of Harmon Brothers. We are known as the “Viral Video Guys”
      2. We want to make ads that people want to watch.
    3. What things does a commercial need?
      1. You have to have a product that people actually want and need.
        1. When you can craft a message that makes people want what you have, that is step number 1.
        2. After you have step 1, you can make it funny and memorable. These are secondary to step 1. 
        3. You must have a real product.
      2. In the first 5 seconds, we have to hook your attention.
        1. If you don’t hook in 5 seconds, you’re gone.
        2. It has to be surprising and appropriate.
        3. This doesn’t have to be an inappropriate shock or scarry shock.
        4. We have thrown cars off of cliffs to bring that shock
      3. After the hook, you must have a problem.
        1. You have to present it in an empathetic way.
        2. You have to show “I know what you are facing”
        3. Once you have shown that you have been there, you can provide the solution with authority because you have been there before.
    4. Benton Crane, What does a commercial with you cost?
      1. The budget can range from $10,000 to $100,000+
      2. The principles we teach have nothing to do with the budget. 
      3. As your company grows, your budget does too so that you can make higher and higher quality videos.
    5. How much time does a 60 second ad take to edit?
      1. They take 6 months from beginning to end for one of our high budget ads.
    6. What is the return on investment?
      1. Poo Pourri went from $7 Million to $30 Million
      2. Purple Mattress went from $0 per year to a publicly traded company
    7. What is your opinion on censorship right now?
      1. I hate forced government censorship. 
      2. Facebook and YouTube are privately owned companies and they can do what they want. 
      3. Their censorship has opened a door for other platforms.
