Matthew William Slater was born on September 9th of 1985. He’s a National Football League football player and special teams specialist for the New England Patriots. Matthew played his college football at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the NFL’s 5th round in the 2008 draft. Matthew Slater is one of the most respected players within the Patriots organization and locker room because of the man that he chooses to be both on and off the football field.

As a devout Christian, Matthew Slater is all about setting the standard both on and off the field. As championship coaches and players will tell you…one of the key elements that determines where a team will consistently win on the football field is that mysterious thing called faith. When players have faith in each other and the offensive, defensive and special teams systems that they are to execute teams win more and Matthew Slater’s dependability, diligence and commitment to winning inspire that kind of faith. 

So why is Matthew Slater one of the most respected members of the New England Patriots team? 

Matthew Slater is listed as a wide receiver on the Patriots roster, yet he has caught just one regular season pass during his entire 12 year NFL career. So how is he even on the team? And why is he respected by both fans and players so much?

For starters, every Monday from the very beginning of training camp and throughout the season, Matthew Slater presiders over the team’s Bible study. Although the team’s former chaplain Jack Easterby has moved on to take a job with the Houston Texans, Matthew Slater continues to lead this Bible study. This Bible study is typically attended by 10 to 12 active Patriots players including Devin McCourty. Although the team does not allow cameras, or print media to cover the prayer service held before each and every game, Matthew Slater is there.

Where did Matthew Slater Come From?

Matthew Slater grew up in Southern California in a family that truly loved the game of football. His father, Jackie Slater was a living legend in the game of football and was actually an all-pro defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams for 20 years which is incredible when you consider that the average NFL player is only in the league for an average of 3 years. Matthew’s father, Jackie played on the Rams from 1976 all the way up until 1995. His father’s diligence, and performance both on and off the field earned him his induction into the pro football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. 

The Loyalty of the Slater Family

During Jackie’s 20 year NFL career he spent his entire career with one team which is almost unheard of in the world of professional sports and his son looks like he is going to be spending his entire career with the same professional sports team as well. Jackie graduated from Jackson State University and was actually a teammate of the late great NFL running back, Walter Payton.

Jackie was drafted in the third found of the NFL Draft in 1976 and did not get much playing time until 1979. During his career, standing at a height of 6 ft. 4 inch and playing at a weight of 277 pounds, Jackie earned a reputation as being one of the most consistent offensive linemen in the history of the NFL. Throughout his career he was chosen to be on 7 Pro Bowl teams. Jackie credits his work ethic and hustle in practice to Walter Payton who he says, “taught him to compete in practice.”  In 1983, Jackie and the Rams offensive line showcased their dominance plowing the way and blocking for Eric Dickerson who was able to set the rookie record for the most rushing yards that year with 1,808 yards gained while running the ball. Jackie is also the only player in the history of the NFL to play in three different cities for the same team (Los Angeles from 1976 to 1979, Anaheim from 1980 to 1994 and St. Louis in 1995).

However, Jackie’s 6 foot and 205 pound son, Matthew was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft, yet has made an incredible seven Pro Bowls as a special team player for his role as the Patriots’ “Gunner.” If you aren’t familiar with what a “gunner” is, you must know that this position is also commonly referred to around the league as the “headhunter,” “the kamikaze,” “the shooter” and the “flyer” and it is basically the job of the “gunner” to run down the sideline as fast as possible in an attempt to tackle the kick returner or punt returner as quickly as possible. In order to be a gunner on a punt team you must also be able to catch a football well and to be able to block with the best of players. Since retiring from playing, Jackie Slater has worked in LA at an ABC affiliate, he became the co-offensive lineman coach with Irv Eatman in 2006 for the Oakland Raiders and is now the offensive line coach at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California.

Throughout his career, Matthew Slater has been known as both a player and a person who is always wanting to improve and to become the best version of himself that he can possibly be which is good because he plays for the New England Patriots which are always looking for ways to improve and to become a better team.

So that faith really has mirrored a lot of what we see on the field as well as in the locker room where it’s later has had such an impact on everyone he’s ever played with in every aspect of his life. Matthew Slater is continually challenged by the lessons taught to him by his father. One might say things came full circle this past February at Super Bowl 53 the pats were taking on the Los Angeles Rams Jackie’s former team and it was also the same franchise over which the Patriots scored their first Superbowl victory in 2002 for Slater. However, that game had a full circle feel for a different reason. As we previously stated, his father as a Rams legend and Jackie Slater’s number 78 has even been retired by the organization. However, both the younger and the elder Slaters, wherever the consummate professionals, Matthew, was proudly wearing the patriots colors. The red, white, and blue were done very proudly by Matthew on that day and he was heavily relied upon to do his job on the field.

You don’t dislike Matthew Slater, you’re not in love with Matthew Slater. But what do you know of Matthew Slater and how did you first come in contact with the name Matthew Slater? Well you would always talk about Matthew Slater and the first thing that popped into my head was saved by the bell. Oh my God. This part, what he’s talking about. Cause again, it’s like I dislike, I’m just not like a huge like football guy who’s Slater from saved by the best Slater, you know, AC Slater, AC Slater. Yeah. AC Slater. Mario Lopez. Okay. Let me think of his real name later from saved by the bill. You know, I don’t, I wouldn’t ever have thought this is amazing. I love this. Don’t let me, so let me queue it up here. This is a AC Slater. Let me see. Let me find him. I see him now. He was the guy who was always like the physically fit Pentagon, right?

Oh yeah, I remember this now. Okay,

Beautiful. Okay. Back to you. Sorry about that. No, you’re totally fine. But yeah, so what I know of Matthew’s later though is like a highlights that you shown us and little clips from like the the Patriots locker room, shall they do, what are they call that? Yeah. After every game they, they celebrate the victory in the locker room and Slater is the captain of the Patriots, right? One of the captains. So he does the coin toss. Oh, he helps teach new players the playbook. He is sort of the model for diligence and here’s what you need to know. Check this out. Matthew Slater, think about this folks. Matthew Slater is a wide receiver, so he’s been listed as a wide receiver on the Patriots and Matthew Slater has been an Indian in the NFL now for 12 years and he has made seven pro bowls and he’s only caught one pass his entire career. And this weekend versus the bills. I had a man tear moment. I’m serious. I had a man here, he got his first touchdown ever. Nice. Wow. And I was going yes, yes. Slate. And we have audio of Matthew Slater reacting to getting his first touchdown. Let me queue it up here. Let me, let me go to the 17 second Mark. Here we go.

Special moment. I think as a young Sher, you always dream of being able to score a touchdown and especially in the NFL game. So just really a blessing to, to actualize that dream and very thankful for the, you know, the support that I get from my teammates that really made it, I think, special for me just then being so excited for me, celebrating with me and to do it in a winning effort. Most importantly, Matthew Slater.

Great American. Big, big congratulations to Matthew Slater. Now I want to ask you this. Dr Breck you put, you put in football for a long time, right? I did. What point, what positions did you play in high school? I went to a smaller school, so we played a lot of positions. But mostly I was a running back and a slot receiver. And then on defense, a corner safety. Can you explain what a what happens during a punt return? If I was a punt returner, you were okay. That was one of the things I had. So let’s say that the, the Patriots are going to punt the ball and they’re going to punt the ball to the other team. Right? So a guy like you is going to return the punt. And what is your strategy as a par, as a punt return. What do you guys, what is your team trying to do in order to make it possible for you to get the most yards possible after you catch the punt?

Well yeah, you’ve got a couple of different strategies. I mean, sometimes they’ll create like a wall and you’re trying to run behind the wall. Assume I know very little about everybody from the opposing team is coming directly at you. So we just kicked the ball. Yeah, you’re standing out there, you’re in an Island by yourself as the returner. Your way, as you’re looking straight up for the ball, you’re waiting for the ball to come down or to get tattooed from a big mean guy and your team’s trying to bend. So your team’s trying to block those guys, slow them down. And so you catch the ball. And meanwhile in, in our coaches scheme, we were trying to line up a wall on the right or the left. Sometimes you try to create a wedge through the middle. And so you create a a Valley or a pathway for that runner to go down the way.

And so a lot of times very successful punt returners will follow that scheme up to about halfway point. And then they reversed the field. They go against the grain cause all the momentum’s going to the left or the right and they’ll shift and go opposite. And the next thing you know, you know, they, they, they beat man and the rest is green grass. Now there’s a position on the team that is punting the ball known as a gunner. Yes. That very few teams use today. It’s not a very popular position, but Matthew Slater is a known as perhaps the last great gunner in the NFL. And what he does, what he does is his job is to, when his team punts the ball is to sprint down that field and to try to get to a guy like you and tackle you before any of the rest of that could happen.

Right. That’s his job. That was my job when we were on often when we had to punt the ball. Really you cause I was fast now. So to get there before any of the rest of that could set up, you sprint down the sidelines or what was your move to get there first for us, our gun, we had two gunners, one on either side of the field and on the outside of the field. And so, yeah, we’re the two fastest guys that are on the field for our team and our job is to get down there hopefully before he’s even caught the punt. But if not as soon as he does to get him tackled as far down the field so that they have to drive there the remainder of the field to make a touchdown. So let me make sure listeners are understanding this.

So we know that Matthew Slater, his job is to be the gunner, right? To help assist his team when they punt the ball. We also know, this is what bill Belichick says about Coachville Belichick says about Matthew Slater. He said he’s a strong leader. He’s obvious. He obviously has a strong role in the kicking game, but he’s one of the most respected players on the team as he should be by everyone. He’s a high quality person. He’s been a great part of our team for over a decade. Do you guys, I wanna make sure the listeners understand this. If you’re listening today, think about this for a second. The average NFL player plays three seasons, three right? Three that’s like the average. Do you understand that? He’s been on the team for 12 years, right? That’s huge. And what he does is he is, has a unique role on the team.

You might say, well how is it possible for him to be on the team that long if that’s what he does? I mean, he doesn’t get passes. Couldn’t they find somebody else to do this? Well, no, because it’s cause because they can’t find somebody else who can be the best gunner in the NFL and be one of the highest character people in the NFL. And when you’re in a locker room, dr Breck, I’ve never played a football at a high level, could you please explain the morale of the team at halftime when you’re losing? What could happen if you don’t have high character people on the team? Keeping the morale high, what happens? So a lot of times what happens in that situation is a lot of blame call, name-calling, blaming. It’s nobody else’s fault. It’s everyone else. It’s no one you’re taking personal responsibility.

It’s always, you know, you didn’t do your part. You dropped the ball here. Rather than, you know, I would say the high quality caliber character people are going to take that responsibility themselves. They’re going to identify what could have been done better. It start to strategize what needs to happen next. You don’t dwell in the, in the past and you, you definitely aren’t just trying to tear your, your teammates apart. You’re trying to pull everybody together. Knowing that it is that team effort that’s going to ultimately win the game, not the individual efforts. So what I want to do is I want all the listeners to understand there are three main principles that I’m going to teach you on today’s show. Three main principles. But I want you to learn it through the lens, through the perspective of Matthew Slater.

Okay, sir, there are three unique learning ideas. Three of the three principles I want you to grasp. All right? One principle number one is everybody on your team has to do their job. Now think about this for a second. Dr Breck. If I own a business today and I hire somebody to be my front desk guy and his job is to answer the phone and it might not seem like a glorious job to answer the phone, that’s all he does is answers the phone and to greet patients at your practice. Right. Although it might not seem glorious, what would happen, Jason, if the guy on my team who hit his only job is to greet people and answer the phone, what if he doesn’t do a good job? What happens? You have people that aren’t greeted and fillings that aren’t answered, which means you have no business, so why would bill Belichick on a football team say, I’m going to hire?

He says that character, he says talent sets the floor, but character is is really the, the the, the ceilings. He talks about character. He’ll hire character and train skill. Why? Why do you think bill Bellacheck wants to hire character as opposed to going after skill? Just why would, what was your, all the listeners out there go for character over skilled? Well because anybody with high character is going to be more trainable. They’re going to be more coachable. Like that’s the, that’s the athlete that you want. Like it doesn’t matter if let’s say, you know, Slater watching his videos, he’s fast and I’m sure he probably didn’t start out that fast, but you could teach them how to get there. The thing is he has to have the mindset to want to get there and to be able to listen to you and to be able to be coached by you.

So principle number one, I want to make sure everybody’s getting this idea is one, you have to hire character over skill, you have to hire character over skill. And I, I can’t think of any better example than a guy who’s been the NFL now for 12 years. This is his 13th year. He’s a seven time pro bowl player. He’s listed as a wide receiver and he’s only caught all pass any, just scored his first touchdown. Right? That’s the kind of you need character. He’s clearly not the best receiver in the NFL or he would be a receiver catching the balls. Obviously on the team because of the off field benefits that he brings to the team more so than the on-field benefits. As a special teams player, your special teams aren’t on the field all that much as far as the time. A lot of our listeners don’t understand that.

We have a lot of listeners who are entrepreneurs who are not into football. Could you explain, if you played football, how often is the special teams unit? Cause there’s office that’s playing when the team has the ball, there’s defense, it’s playing when your team doesn’t have the ball. How often does special teams, most of the game happens when your team’s on offense or defense and special teams is really a one play at a time event. And so a punt happens, a happens field goal or a field goal. Those are really the only times you have specialty character lay at a time and you’ve got to make a big impact with with, with a very small moment or window to do so. But yes, I mean you have the opportunity to make a big splash with a single play. But to me a Slater is obviously one of those guys that he brings so much value to the team as a captain, as a leader as the morale guy as a, an almost a junior coach in a way a big brother that that’s worth more to bill Belichick than even what he can provide on the field now.

Okay. So T T teaching principle number one, you gotta hire character and train skill. Let me, let me tell you what James White, the Patriots running back has to say about working with Matthew Slater. He says he keeps the locker room together. He makes sure it’s a family like atmosphere in this building. Like I said, there can be some tough days, there can be some easy days. But he’s the guy that keeps everybody locked in and keeps the great comradery throughout his team. Think about this, what would happen, cause you’ve played football Breck and I haven’t, what would happen if you didn’t have a Matthew Slater keeping it positive? What are some of the things you’ve seen in a locker room happen when you don’t have a positive force there? A positive rock running around the locker room, cheering people up, keeping them focused, what would happen by default?

Well, I mean for one, you’re definitely not going to have the legacy that the Patriots have of consistency and winning. You’re going to have a team that may be a flash in the pan, have some, some good days, some and many bad days. So I would say far more often you’re going to have a lot of things where the team is losing individuals are wanting to highlight themselves. You know, especially in the NFL there are guys who have reached a level where they feel like they can kinda act a fool. And so you’ve got a lot of premadonnas and things and so those kinds of personalities are big and large and they would take over. But when you’ve got the character people that kind of keep everybody in check, kind of keep your feet on the ground in your head in the game, then yeah, you’ve got a much better opportunity for success, especially longterm.

Think about tests. I’m principle number two is you want to hire diligent people who can energize other people who can energize other people. Jason, what’s the difference between, you know, coming to work and being a positive person and energizing the team and let’s make it real. Let’s go into elephant in the room. What role can energetic manager or assistant manager who has the ability or who decides to energize other people, what kind of role can they have in the overall success of a, of a store? In our handbook, one of the biggest core values we have is to have a great culture. We want great people who are shiny, happy people as REM would say. And they show up and it’s all just high energy. If you have somebody who they themselves are high energy and people can say, Oh cool, I can respect that Jason’s having a good day. But if I go in there and my energy is able to bleed out into other people, I can make data, I can make their day better, which keeps my day rocking. Awesome. Makes our customers have a really awesome experience and it just helps us like continue on towards our core values. So let me, let me queue this up real quick. This is Matthew Slater in the locker room and Breck you just kind of visualize per in this locker room. This is after every single Patriots game.

The management, the brass comes down from the press box. They come down from the luxury suites, they come down from the offices and they come into the locker room and they positively affirmed the team. They touch everybody, they encourage all the players. And after each and every Patriots game, they put the post locker room celebration footage on their website so you can see it. But again, after every game, the executives come down, they encourage all the players, they tell them good job. Even if they lose, they’re coming down there to tell thanking the players. And then bill Bellacheck tells the team what they could do better and what they did well. And then Matthew Slater comes in to kind of put a bow on it to wrap it up. And this is what he does after every game. Let me cue it up. Here we go.

[Inaudible] Or begin. At the beginning it was, but now it’s something that I really enjoy doing. I need an amen. How do [inaudible] first Sunday victory, how we feel about going on and all. How do you feel though about our fourth consecutive appearance in the AFC championship game?

This is what he does this, this is what he does. And before Slater did it, they had a guy by the name of Teddy Bruschi who did the same role. They’ve got to have somebody on that team that energizes other people and stables. The ship keeps the ship stable emotionally. You can’t just have a bunch of skilled people on your team. Right? And I ask you, mr listener, mrs listener, who is in your team, who’s figuratively in your locker room, who’s in your business right now? Do you have a Matthew Slater, as Jason said, who’s setting the tone? Who’s setting the tone? Yeah. Now you as an owner, you have got to set the tone and then when you’re not there, if you have a business where you’re not in the office every day, you’ve got to have the Matthew Slater’s of the world. Now, Jack Welch defines a perfect employee as this.

He says, a perfect employee is somebody who has the four E’s and a P. Alright? So the first E is energy. You come to work with energy. The second is you can energize others. Three is you can actually get it done. You can execute. So energy, energize, execute. Then there’s edge meaning you have, you can make the tough call and fours, you have a passion for your job. The four E’s and a P energy, energize, execute, edge, passion. Alright, so principle number three I want to teach you is you have to define their roles on dr Breck so that high character people can succeed if bill Belichick hadn’t refined the role. So specifically that a guy like Matthew Slater who doesn’t specialize in kitchen passes could be successful. He wouldn’t have a spot on the team, right? So bill Belichick has defined the roles so that high character people can succeed.

And I’m quoting Matthew Slater, he says this, he says, I just cover kicks. There’s a lot of MES out there on the street. So I’ve got to fight for my job every year. Now think about this for a second. Matthew Slater said, I just covered kicks, which is true. So, but bill Belichick, to his credit has defined the role so uniquely that a guy like Matthew Slater can succeed. So let’s break that down into elephant in the room and then we’ll go to you a dr Breck on this Jason, we have a role in elephant in the room where we have people that what their job is is to answer the phone, right? Correct. Do they have to also cut hair? No. So the people who answer the phone don’t cut hair. Nope. Do the people who care, do the people who cut hair answered the phone? Nope.

And if they do, they shouldn’t. So the people who answer the phone don’t what the people went to the phone don’t cut hair. And the people who cut hair don’t answer the phone. But if we made it where the people who answered the phone had also cut hair, then we couldn’t have a lot of people on the team because the ability to answer the phone and the ability to cut hair are not mutually exclusive, but they’re usually not skills that people have at the same time. Right. I mean, the ability to cut hair is really hard to do. True. And the ability to answer the phone is really, really hard to do. Right. And sometimes the energetic people that we hired to answer the phone are great, but they wouldn’t have a spot on our team if they had to cut hair to no, it’s not their highest to misuse. So if bill Belichick had a role where you had to be able to catch passes and play special teams, he probably wouldn’t have a role for a Matthew Slater [inaudible]. So dr Breck and your with your office, I had dr breck.com D R B R E C k.com. T R B R E C k.com. You guys see thousands of patients per year. We do walk us through some of the roles on your team.

So we have several roles. We have a receptionist whose main job is to greet patients and answer the phones. We have the office manager who is really one who kind of the center cog of the wheel of our office. So many different things flow through that position. But they’re keeping other people on track, so they’re managing, but then they’re also taking care of patients and then backing up, answering phones working with some of the billing. They, they’ve got an eye on everything. So they really, that 10,000 foot view person that can kind of see all the pieces moving. We have a billing specialist that works with insurance, works with personal injury

And attorneys. We have massage therapists that their role is only to do massage therapy. And then we have a, a chiropractic assistant who assist me in putting patients on and off of therapies doing things that I’ve prescribed for the patient. And then myself who’s doing the adjusting. Do you remember a time when you first started and it was just you? Yes. And then did you hire like one person or was it just you? Just one. Yeah, I mean, it was me for a while and then I hired one and she had all of those roles kind of rolled into one. What a crazy job she had. Her job was to answer the phone, do billing, do some what kind of sales, I’m sure occasionally assist patients with things, right? I mean, and it do probably account in some kind of random thing that might come in my head and say, Hey, what are my assistant?

What a terrible job. Think about that. Think about anybody who works for a small business where you’re asked to do everything. What a terrible job. What a just what an absolutely horrible, hellacious, terrible job. And I say this because a lot of listeners out there, they’ll hire somebody. Jason, you see this only every time, but when you work with like medical businesses, we see a lot of doctors that’ll hire a young whippersnapper. Usually someone under the age of 30 with a marketing degree or a business degree and they’ll say, all right, marketing whimpers never as a doctor, I need you to do four 1414 things today. And you’re like, okay, what will I have to do? Step one, bringing more patients. Step two, update the website. Step three, let’s go viral on YouTube. Step four, record a podcast. Step five, make sure that we are improving our reputation online.

Step number six, get that billboard launch. Step seven, create those business cards. Step eight and ready. Got to go. I’m going to, I thought you said there was 14 things. Oh, I’ll, I’ll text it to you. And so now the, and Jason, you’ve seen this. Oh yeah, they’d be, they’d be Willard young whippersnapper who now works for four set doctors. How does that go over? Well they get as much done as they possibly can and then it’s never good enough. It’s never good enough. And then there’s more. And then there’s more. And then there’s these conversations that people think that they have but they don’t really have. Yeah. And then, and then what happens is bad bosses will begin to text employees huge to do lists via text whenever the thought occurs to them. Yeah. So it’s like the employee goes home at five and the doctors will email or text the person at like 8:00 PM an endless stream of to do lists. Like, Oh by the way, page two of our website needs to, it’s misspelled. Page three. I need to get that written. Page four and there’s a never ending, right? And so a lot of people manage their company that way, but bill Bellacheck has clearly defined the roles that he did. He has a team and therefore guys like Matthew Slater, it’s like, what do I, what am I supposed to do? Coach? You’re going to be the gunner. Your job

Is to make sure you’re the first guy down the field and you cover kicks. You tackle the guy who caught that punt. That’s your job. All right, so go do your job. And you hear bill Bellacheck talking about this, but he’s so clearly defined the roles that everybody knows what their job is. Now, let me give you a little fun fact to it. In 2019 the Patriots have the following seven people as captains. They have 53 players, but the following seven captains centered David Andrews, who’s going to miss the season with blood clots in his lungs. He’s lucky to be alive. Seriously linebacker, Landon, Robert’s quarterback, Tom Brady, receiver slash, gunner, Matthew Slater, free safety D, Devin McCourty, linebacker Deontay, Hightower, and running back, James White, whoever Matthew Slater’s considered by many within the Patriots nation to be perhaps one of the most respected captains and players in the league over the past few years.

Whenever you watch the Patriots locker room celebration following a Patriot’s win on patriots.com you will hear Matthew Slater saying, so how do we feel about being AFC champions? And everyone goes, Oh yeah, that’s his deal. But he does a little kind of a sermonette, a word of encouragement for the team. And he does it every, every game. And what’s great about Matthew Slater’s, he’s a winner on the field and off the field. Matthew Slater is a devout Christian and Matt Matthew Slater’s all about setting the standard, both on and off the field as championship coaches and players will tell you one of the key elements that determines where a team will consider whether, whether a team will consistently win on the field or not, is that mysterious thing called faith. When players have faith in each other. And the [inaudible] defensive and special team systems that they are too. They, they, they, they, they, when, when they believe in the systems, they win.

When they win, they believe when the systems are clearly defined and they believe in them, they win. And it’s Matthew’s dependability, diligence, and commitment that inspires that kind of faith. But faith is a weird, that faith is such a weird thing. Faith, faith, faith. Oh, pay. It is weird because one it, you can’t see it. Nope. Oh, but you can feel it. Oh yeah. Can you not, when someone doesn’t have faith. Yeah. So at the conference we just had a conference and I will, I will share my perspective of day one. I’d like to get Brex take on this, but day one of the conference, we start at 7:00 AM and there’s a certain energy in the room. I’m playing upbeat music to create kind of a great vibe. Something where people, it’s I want, I want it to feel I want people to feel like, man, this, this is where I want to be. So the music kind of sounds like this. It’s kinda like, so it’s kind of an upbeat vibe and then people are arriving. We’ve got pinion wood going in the air. There’s hundreds of people there from all over the world. Did it shock you at the last conference? How many people are not from Tulsa? It was crazy. Yeah. Cause everybody, yeah. Where’d you getting fruit from?

Tulsa. And we have like the whole thrive team. Right? If you’re not everybody put their hands up. It was nuts. Yeah. So you’ve got people from Florida, people from Canada, people from California shouts out to Iowa, Iowa, people from Guam. There’s a good vibe going, but people, people don’t believe me, they don’t because they’ve not met me first. Right. They haven’t really met me. And so what happens is I see it all the time, and I did at this point. It’s funny, but it wasn’t funny for a long time. There’ll be sitting next to like Charles Cola, longtime client Cola, fitness.com. By the way, super fast growing gym. We’ve, since we’ve worked with Charles, I mean they’ve grown from two gyms to now five. And he’s, tell me about his growth pattern. I’m like, wow. I mean that guy is killing. He implements everything.

We teach him his wife Amber. Awesome. Or they’ll sit next to the largest home builder in Oklahoma, Shaw homes. One of my longtime clients who’s growing, by the way, they grew, check this out. They’ve grown from like $28 million of sales. They’re on paste at 70 million this year. That’s been a client for like three years. Wow. You’re sitting next to real people. Yeah. And this is, this is how the conversation goes. So does this actually work? It has a bunch of BS. That’s what happens. Or after like two hours they’ll go, when’s the upsale coming? I mean are we going to try sell me to become like a coaching ambassador? Cause you know a lot of the coaching programs, this is how coaching programs work. You go to the coaching conference and they teach you to become a coach and then you get certified. It’s like $25,000 to become a coach.

And then for every person that you bring with you to the conference, then you get like half off. So then now you’re only paying 12,500 to be a certified coach. Right. And then you bring a friend, now it’s half off and then your clients come from whoever you bring to the conference, they give you somebody else’s friend as a client. And so you’re, it’s like a multilevel coaching program. Brick. You’ve seen these kinds of things. Oh yeah, for sure. And so people are always waiting for the upsell to happen. And when you’ve been in those then yeah. That’s what you anticipate every other conference is going to be like. So what I have to do is build that faith. Yup. And it is really hard to build that faith. And Jason, why is it hard to build that faith? Well cause like with faith again it’s like it’s, people can’t see it.

They feel it. And so in order to completely give yourself over to like in order to have faith in something, you have to give all of yourself to it. And a lot of people having not been familiar with something first, they find it really hard. So what we do is I try to build that faith by doing three moves and thrive nation. You might say clevis, you are a very manipulative man. You are a bad man. You’re the kind of man that I don’t, I don’t like because you are a manipulative man. Well manipulate. Let’s read, manipulate. Let’s read the definition of manipulative. Manipulative means relating to the manipulation of an object or part of the body. Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the behavior or perception of others. Oh, that’s true. So that is what I do. Yep.

So let me queue this up. I’m going to play. This is what, this is what I did at the conference and you tell me, Jason, if this is, if this is shady, if this is cool, if it’s not cool, I just want to hear if this is because I do this. I have three ways I do it and and I don’t feel bad about it. I felt very, very good about it. But these are, these are my three ways I do it. One is I have real people who are successful sitting throughout the audience who have actually achieved success, who are current clients and I don’t pay them. I just say, Hey, there’s somebody in the audience that’s going to be there at this conference who’s not doing well just like you didn’t do well three years ago, four years ago, five years ago, whatever.

And I need you to sit there and I’d like for you to come for at least a couple of hours and share your story. Is that shady? Not at all. You’re having real people share with real people elements of their success and said, Hey, like you know with Aaron it’s like, Hey dude, I was where you are if not worse. And now I’m here. Where, where did Aaron start at by the way? Aaron was, this will show homes, right? He was a delivery driver for dominoes. And what was he doing while driving illegal things such as drinking. Yes, he was in an intoxicated, he talks about all the time. He’s very open about it. That’s what, that’s what makes it powerful. Yeah. He was an impossible drunk driver. He was a guy who was an outraging alcoholic, but he delivered pizzas and now he runs the largest home building company in Oklahoma.

Right. So he’s there. I’m Luke Owens with the hub gym. Longtime client. He shared at this last conference before he, he literally the day before our conference was at a coffee shop doing what Jason? I know I wasn’t there for Luke’s speech that day. He was, he had had written a suicide note and he had fully finished writing it and he put it in a little, he had it with him and he was going to kill himself. Wow. And he told a buddy of his that you know, you, I’m going to go to that conference. But he said literally if he did not learn what he needed to learn to kill himself because he had a gym he’d been running for over a decade. Yeah. Never made any money. And he was just done with it and he had literally written a suicide note. That’s crazy. That’s nuts.

But you know why? I have people come up and speak is because a lot of people unfortunately, literally do kill themselves. And I think it’s, I think it’s very incumbent upon, I don’t know, most people do not seek a breakthrough until the breakdown. Oh, absolutely. So I feel like if you’re going to come to a workshop, it is incumbent upon me to help manipulate, to help find a social influence, to aim, to change your behavior. Because if you keep doing what doesn’t work, what happens brick? If you keep doing what doesn’t work, you keep losing. I mean, you know, in that like suicide is the ultimate loss. Terrible. I mean you’re talking loss of life, but yeah, I mean if what you’re doing is not working and you’re not changing anything, by definition, that’s insanity. But then also you’re just going to continue to lose and so you’re never going to get ahead. You’re never going to find that success. It’s not just about

Staying the course, doing all the wrong things. So my three moves. If you’d come to a conference, I want you to understand my three manipulative moves I will do, I will, I will use these on you to help change you for the better one is you’ll be sitting next to somebody who has had major success because I invite the people who’ve had success. I don’t pay them at all. And I just say, can you please come to the workshop and encourage somebody out there and share your story. Please be vulnerable. Please share. The Bible studies typically attended by 10 to 12 active Patriot players including Devin McCourty. Although the team does not allow cameras or print media to cover the prayer service held before each and every game. Matthew Slater is there. Matthew Slater is a man who sets the example for his team each and every day with the level of effort that he displays on the practice field during each and every practice. Well, we’re in the heck did this guy come from. I mean, okay, let’s, let’s think about that. If you have a prayer service or you have a prayer group, a men’s prayer group, and you do it every week and there’s only, you know, 10 to 12 people who show up, it’s one in a five players, right?

Wouldn’t it be easy to quit dr brick? It could be [inaudible] but he doesn’t quit. Why? Why does he do it every week? It has value. He’s got faith and he’s got value and it’s beyond football for him. It definitely is. Yeah. That’s where the respect comes from. Right? Yeah. Well, and I mean, even what he said earlier about, I’m just covering kicks. I mean, he’s got an attitude of gratitude there where he’s at as well. He knows that life could be far different than it is currently, and he’s not taking it for granted. He’s going to make every day count. He’s wanting to make the biggest impact you know, pay it forward and pay it back all at the same time. You know, Matthew Slater, you say, where did Matthew Slater come from? Well, Maddie’s Slater grew up in Southern California and a family that truly loved the game of football.

His father, Jackie, was a living legend in the game of football and was actually an all pro defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams for 20 years, 20 years. The average player plays three years and his father played on the Rams for 20 years. That’s incredible. Matthew’s father, Jackie, played on the Rams from 1976 all the way until 1995 his father, his diligence and performance both on and off the field, earned him an introduction into the pro football hall of fame in Canton, Ohio. His father is a hall of fame football player now the loyalty of the Slater family. During Jackie’s 20 year NFL career, he spent his entire career with one team which is almost in her unheard of. That’s insane in the world of professional sports and his son looks like he’s going to be spitting his entire career with the same professional sports team as well. Jackie graduated, his father, graduated from Jackson state university and was actually a teammate of the late great NFL running back. Walter Payton in college like father like son Jackie and Matthew Slater have each earned seven pro bowl selections while demonstrating incredible loyalty to the organizations that believed in them enough to draft them. Jackie was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft in 1976 that’s his father and he did not get much playing time until 1979 that’s three years folks. That’s three years. That’s three years. Think about that. That’s relayed gratification.

That’s you starting your business. Three years diligence. No, no real fruit yet. Right. During his career he stood at six foot four and played at a weight of 277 pounds. Jackie earned reputation as being one of the most consistent offensive linemen in the history of the national football league. Throughout his career, he was chosen to be on seven pro bowl teams and Jackie credits has work ethic and hustle and practice to Walter Payton who he says taught him to compete in practice. In 1983 Jackie and the Ram’s office IV line showcased one of the most incredible displays of dominance, plowing the way and blocking for Eric Dickerson, who was able to set the rookie record for the most rushing yards in a year for 1,808 yards gained while running the ball. Jackie is also the only player in the history of the NFL to play in three different cities and on the same team.

So it was the Rams move to from Los Angeles to Anaheim and to st Louis all during his career. However, Jackie’s son is six feet tall and tutored in five pounds. Matthew was drafted in the NFL in 2008 in the fifth round of 2008, yet has made seven pro bowls primarily playing as the gunner on the team. And if you aren’t familiar with what the term gunner is, again this position is commonly commonly referred to around the league as the headhunter the kamikaze, the shooter, the flyer. Could you please explain why this position might be called the kamikaze dr brick? Well, cause you really are going about it with a lot of self abandon. You are running as fast as you possibly can. You’re trying to outrun everyone else and you want to be the first one to get there and just hammer the, the guy that’s looking up at the ball, if he hasn’t waved his arm above his head yet.

And you run down that sideline as fast as possible and your job is to tackle them as quickly as possible. And everybody’s tried to what? Stop you. You and, yeah, I mean, oftentimes you see these guys completely laid out in a Superman type pose as they’re going to make that tackle. I mean, it is complete just selflessness. Just get yourself on that guy. So in order to be, in order to be a gunner on a punt team, you also have to be able to catch the ball well and be able to block with the best players since retiring. I mean, think about this for a second. That’s a tough position to have that that’s just a tough position to have. All right. So like father, like son and, and we know that that Jackie’s father or Matthew’s father, Jackie wasn’t just a good guy on the field, but he’s a great guy off the field, you know, since retiring from football.

He worked for a while with an ABC affiliate in LA and he became a co offensive lineman coach with Irv Eastman in 2006 for the Oakland Raiders. And he’s now the offensive line coach at Azusa Pacific university in Azusa, California. And his whole focus is on mentoring up the players, teaching them to develop as people. Now, the big fundamental Matthew Slater always calls heads. Let’s talk about this for a second. Dr Breck, please explain what before the game about the ritual of how football works and, and calling heads and tails. Cause every before every game, the coin toss the coin toss, explain what this is.

So in order to create a fair method of deciding who will start with the ball to start the game, which team will kick the ball to the other team? They do a coin toss. And so one team we’ll call you know, the, I think it’s the, a visiting team gets to call the, the actual coin toss. And then the ref tosses the coin in the air and whatever comes up you know, if, if in this case, if it’s heads and that’s what you called, then you get to decide, do you want to get the ball first or do you want to get the ball to start the second half of the game?

So Matthew watched his dad, Jackie be a captain of the team and so he was raised by a seven time pro bowl. NFL veteran ended about Christian. And so Matthew chose to step up to the standards set by his father and became obsessed with the fundamentals of football and becoming a detail guy, a nuance guy, the guy who knew the game and in a way that other people didn’t. In fact, just like his father, Matthew always calls, he copies his dad. I’m at a level where people might go, really, do you have to copy everything about your dad? One of the things he does is his dad always called heads during the pregame coin toss that takes place before each game to determine who gets the ball. His dad always called heads and so Matthew always calls heads every single time and he gets to call heads or tails every time.

Right? again, this is powerful. This is now we have a notable quarter wall here. This is from Jackie sitting down with his father and they did an interview together. So it’s Jackie and Matthew sitting down together. And once you hear this little audio clips, you can kind of hear the impact that his dad had on, let me cue this up. This is the four 36 Mark. Here we go. Let me think. I’ve got it here. Here we go. Chuck Knox. I might say to somebody that’s six PS proper. Chuck Knox was the coach of a Jackie Slater. Okay, that’s somebody that’s six P’s. Proper preparation prevents piss, poor performance. And so Matthew used to hear me say that all the time when I never even thought about it, that he was listening to [inaudible]. He said to me, proper fibrillation dead because he was around his dad enough.

He kind of, he’s obsessed with preparation just like his father was. And I think that’s really important for everybody to get out of this because you have got to prepare your team, you’ve got to prepare your team every single week. Jason, we do it with our staff at elephant in the room every single week. We do what on Monday, every single week. Every week we have our managers meeting. That way. We all know where we stand, where we can improve, what areas we’re doing good on, but most importantly, how we’re growing and what we can do better. Why do most business owners by default skip those meetings? They either feel uncomfortable or they haven’t. I think the main thing is they haven’t prepared for it. Like they don’t know. They don’t have their numbers in order. They don’t have their game plan set, so if they skip it, they don’t have to talk about it.

Why do most owners show up late for their staff meeting? That’s the last time they have to spend in a meeting that they weren’t prepared for it. And why do most owners who do show up show up late and without an agenda again, they put no forward thinking thought into it. There’s kind of like fly by the seat of their pants and like, okay, whatever comes up we’ll talk about. But other than that, that’s the game plan. There was a chiropractor I’ve worked with years ago, not dr Breck who was based in Dallas. And he asked me to come down there and just watch what has meetings and I love this guy and I hope he’s doing well now, but I’m not kidding. The meeting with the start like at seven and at seven 25 for an eight the meetings were only from seven eight he would come in now and try to weave in an hours worth of content and to 35 minutes.

And he never had a printed agenda and he never had a plan and he was always pissed every time it looks like he hadn’t been to sleep in a month every single time. And how do you think that went over brick? Not well at all. Never went over well. And again, if you’re out there wanting to have success, you’ve got to prepare. So coach Belichick has to prepare for his team’s meetings, right? Just like he expects his players to prepare. Now Matthew Slater has a shared love of the game and a devotion to his faith. Just like his father Jackie Slater chose to pass on more than just his love of football to his son because Jackie chose to also pass on his deep Christian faith to Matthew. Although Jackie and his son share a connection to the game of football, they share a deeper connection to their shared faith and everything.

I’ve read about these guys. Every video I’ve seen every audio clip I’ve watched these guys really, really, really, really do they they, they, they have a huge faith in Christ but they also believe in themselves. They have faith in the system. That’s why he was on the team for 20 years. Jackie was on the same team for 20 Matthew’s been on the same team for now. This is 13 years homies. That’s crazy. Seven pro bowl selections and two super bowl championships. There’s a lot of fruit there. In Matthew’s career throughout Matthew’s career, he’s been selected to be on the all pro bowl team seven times and he’s been a big part of two super Superbowl championships. Matthew, much like many of the all time Patriot great players before him is universally known as being a player in person who plays the game, quote unquote the Patriot way mean meaning that he always knows what needs to be done and when it needs to be done.

Although the Patriots have many great players on their roster each and every year it would be difficult to find another player who is more respected on the roster than Matthew Slater. The game changing factor in Superbowl 53 a lot of people don’t know this, but during the super bowl 53 Matthew Slater always seem to have just kind of the ability to kind of just kinda get me in the right place at the right time. And throughout the game, Matthew Slater was able to down pumps for punter, Ryan Allen, which always seemed to put the Los Angeles Rams and a back against the wall situation. Dr Brett, can you explain what that means when, when the Patriots have to punt the ball because they haven’t advanced the ball enough to, they haven’t got a first down and now we have to kick the ball to the other guy. Can you explain what it feels like to play with your back against a wall where you’re pinned down right there in your own end zone, on your own one yard line or five-year-olds.

So ideally if a, the returner doesn’t catch the ball one of the things that you can do as the team kicking it is to get, get to the ball and you want to get that ball as close to the opposite end zone as possible. So like the one yard line within the five yard line is always beneficial because now that team that’s about to take over on offense has to go 95 yards in order to score. Versus if the guy returns the PO, say he catches it on the 10 yard line and he runs 20 yards ahead. Now they’re at the 30 yard line and so they only have 70 yards to go instead of the 95.

Now talk to me about how it feels when you’re a quarterback or an offensive player cause you are a receiver. That’s a terrible

Place to be to start at your one yard line. Why? Well, for one you do have your back against a a proverbial wall anyway. The end zone is not a place that you want to be holding the ball when you’re trying to go the opposite direction. Because if you get tackled in that end zone, then the opposite team gets two points. It’s called a safety safety. And so you know, when you’re starting at the one yard line, you are automatically in the end zone standing and your line has, their line is coming with full force because this is their one shot. If you, if you make yardage, now you’re, you’re a little bit further advanced. So how does it feel when your pen down there? How does it feel when your pen down there? It feels awful. Yeah, I mean I got nowhere to go.

It’s very stressful. You’ve got the crowd just screaming crazy. You’ve got all the defensive, you know, I mean, if they’re going to show a blitz, it’s coming and they’re going to bring as many as they can, as long as they can still keep some coverage. So yeah, you may have six, seven Beasley men coming right at you as a quarterback with one goal in mind. And that is to hammer you with all four possible and bring you down in the end zone. Now, Jason explained to the listeners out there who maybe aren’t familiar with this, how important is it to fold towels at elephant in the room? People would assume that it’s not, but it’s extremely important. We do it every 30 minutes. And who’s the best towel folder you’ve ever seen? Oh man. I hate to say Mark Miranda just folds the towel so fast and I so pretty.

I don’t know how he does it. So Martin Miranda does a great job of this. He’ll literally just like, he’ll pull one out and then do like this little whip thing. And it’s perfectly folded in like threes and just ready to go. How valuable is it to have a guy like that on the team? Extremely valuable. Why? Because we use those towels for every single service. Each stylist has a have like a, a backstock of 10 ready to go for each customer. We have to have them in the shampoo room. It’s part of the whole experience. And if we ever run out, it’s like pulling the emergency brake on like a train. Everybody’s just like, they lose their momentum. We’re freaking out. We can’t do our job. We’re losing a crucial service. Like it’s as dumb and as minuscule as it seems. It’s a very big detail.

Okay. So what happens dr Breck, if you have a guy like Matthew Slater not on your team and your team always lets the other team gain 20 yards on every punt return, what happens? Well your opportunities for success goes down. So yeah, I mean, the other team has that chance. And they’re sitting in a much more comfortable position. The quarterback can perform with less stress. And so yeah, you’re, you’re always in. You’re never in that really good, good position where now your team has the greater odds of success. What happens if you don’t have a guy like you know, Matthew Slater and your in your locker room or in your office, your office culture. If you’ve got super talented people that are negative, what happens? Well, again, you go back to that tone and I think a tone and attitude are so crucial in any business.

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in. But yeah, a guy like a Matthew Slater brings the right tone brings a positive tone and a maturity. Like I said, the character and he’s a person that even if you don’t agree with everything he says or what he believes, you can respect him. And because he’s doing it in practice, he’s consistent. And so it’s a day in and day out. It’s not just for the cameras, it’s not just for the Showtime of the game. He’s doing this on a regular everyday basis and he’s done it not only consistently daily, but over a long period of time for 12 years. He’s been doing this. And so that’s a huge part of, of what allows your team to be successful is setting that proper tone. And then again, just having the right tone on a consistent basis so that your customers are getting a consistent service or consistent product. You know, customer service is so crucial and you want your customers to have the best experience. You’ve got to set the right tone. So let’s talk about this. Antonio Brown was signed by the Patriots.

He lasted a week. He’s the player who famously wrong, wouldn’t play for the wouldn’t play for the Raiders cause he didn’t like his helmet, didn’t like his shoes. Didn’t like the practice. He didn’t like his contract so it wouldn’t play for the Steelers. Didn’t like his, he presently had a cryotherapy, says he frostbit his feet, didn’t like his helmet, that picture. It wasn’t nasty. He didn’t like his feet. Didn’t like his helmet, didn’t like the practice room. He didn’t like the tone of the general manager. I didn’t want to play on the Steelers. I didn’t like the rule about staying off the social media. Didn’t like the fact that you can’t text people harassing text messages. Didn’t like a lot of things. So the Patriots kept him on the team for like seven days. [inaudible] What happens in a, in a culture, Jason, if you have even one negative person, one negative person, that negative person can start to spread like a weed or rather like a wildfire very fast.

Give me an example from your time managing [inaudible] don’t mention the person’s name now. Put them on blast. You have a half million listeners now. But tell me about, tell me about what happens when there’s one negative person and let’s say the downtown shop when you’ve worked there where you go, Oh, Oh, what, what, what, what kind of w how does it manifest itself? Well, it starts out with that one person having like a bad day and you know, they come in and you can, you know, you may be having like a really good morning, your spirits are super high, the teams are super high. Then that one person comes in huffing and puffing and the whole thing is they want you to ask them what’s wrong so I can unload their entire clip and shoot all their bullets. Well eventually as you do that, you start to break down that positivity that everybody else has built up and that person’s negative attitude spreads to the next person right next to him and then that spreads to the next person.

But then at the same time, as each person gets more progressively pissed, they’re going to start venting to their customers. So now we’ve made an awkward, uncomfortable experience for the customer itself. And then that gets up to management and management or management consensus that there’s something wrong. So you start asking the employees, the employees are freaking out and then they’re overwhelmed because they’re like, dear God, I’ve got eight people’s, you know, fractured psyche to that have to take care of right now. And usually, usually the employees will say, I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus, right? I don’t want to, you know, but, and the customer will usually say, I don’t, I don’t want to throw some into the bus, but the person who cut my hair today, kind of a bad attitude. You know, maybe. So I’m asking you, this is this moment just very actionable when everyone, I want everyone right now to take a moment, get out a sheet of paper and write down who is your Matthew Slater, who is your character? Who is the person who is sets the standard for work ethic, for diligence? Who is that person and who is your Antonio Brown? Who is the person who is super talented? You gave him a shot, but they are a disaster of a person. They’re a culture killer in brick by default. Every single time when I go in to coach a business, they have an in Tonio Brown on their team. Yeah. A culture killer. And I have to find them. Well and it’s, it’s really hard. I had an example given to me years and years ago

It was at a church camp and we were in a cabin with bunks and we had our, our one of our strongest, physically strongest campers up on the top bunk, try to lift up one of the smaller campers and you really can’t do it. I mean it’s really hard. I mean it looks good when you know, a guy like Sylvester Stallone grabbed somebody single-handedly and like lifts them from a crane or from a cliff or something. But in reality it’s very difficult to you know, heave ho and, and just pull somebody up with one arm. But the same smaller person pulled the bigger person off of the bunk rather easily cause gravity is on their side. And I think the same, I mean the, the point of that illustration was to show that, you know, you can be pulled down easier than lifting somebody else up.

And so by default it’s more natural. The flow is going to happen from the positive to the negative easier than it is from the pot, from the negative to the positive. And so if you have that person that is a cancer that’s a wildfire or a weed they, they’re impact happens so much quicker, so much greater and is so much more powerful in a negative sense if it’s not caught quickly and eradicated quickly. But it takes more for that person who’s the, the high person to do, they have to be consistent. They have to do it on a daily basis and they have to have that influence. And then they have to, you know, bring the others around them to the point that like an organization like the Patriots has several of these high caliber people that start to protect the culture so that they don’t allow one person to be that negative influence to bring down the rest of the team. But it’s difficult. I would say you have, you have a team of those people that actually counterbalance the one.

Now let’s think about this for a second. Matthew Slater was the 2017 Bart star award winner. Well, what’s that? Well, in 2017, Matthew Slater, like I said, was honored and given the 2017 Bart star award, which was designed and created to praise and honor the national football league player who best shows outstanding character and leadership skills in their home. And they’re all on the playing field and in their community, in their home, on the football field and in their community and in their home. What does that have to do? We’re talking about football. Why are we talking about in the home? Well, let me tell you what homeys the kind of people have problems at home. Don’t just have problems there. They bring that to work. And Jason, I would ask you this because you see you’ve managed a lot of people. What percentage of the problems related to the business that elephant in the room are related to people having problems at home?

Not a problem with the towels, not a problem with the customer. Now the problem with marketing now the problem with the website, no, no, no, it’s a problem at home that they bring into the office almost 1% and what’s going to happen is a mom, something happened at home that they have no control over or they, you know, or a bad choice they made a decade ago is now manifesting. Exactly. And so instead of taking responsibility and fixing it or saying, Hey, I can fix this after work, they bring it with them and you know, like, like I mentioned before, the person that comes huffing and puffing through the door, it’s because something happened at home. And then immediately what they’re going to do is they’re going to say, my tickets weren’t printed. Right. And then immediately turned that foam issue into a work issue and then go off.

And we have great people now, but I’m telling you, we had to go through some people to find the great people. You have great people, but I’m telling you, the people that had the problems at the elephant in the room or at make your life Epic or any other business I’m involved in always have personal problems. So the Bart star award is given, is given to celebrate people who have success in their home on the playing field and in their community. Now, the Bart star award was named in honor of the NFL hall of fame quarterback Bart Starr, who was chosen to be the most valuable player in both Superbowls one and two. And Matthew’s father was also the winner of the Bart star award in 1995 which makes Jackie and Matthew the only father and son combination to have ever won the award. Throughout the community. Think about this, the community throughout the community. There are people in our, in our community and our surrounding communities that are struggling and Matthew Slater has decided to become a community outreach leader. What does that mean? It means that he is making more money than the average person and he knows it. He’s not one of the top paid players in the NFL. If you could look up his salary real quick, Jason, for this year, Matthew Slater, 2019 salary. A lot of times the Patriots choose not to disclose the salaries of their players, but I think you’ll probably find it throughout Matthew’s career. He has been second to none when it comes to giving back to the local community. In fact, during the 2013 season, Matthew was chosen by the Patriots owner Robert Craft to be given the Ron Burton community service award. And although you’ll never hear about it during a broadcast, Matthew is the Patriot’s point person and official representative for the United way within his local community, Matthew versus versus Matthew. On the date of October 25th of 2016 Matthew Slater chose to host a fundraiser to help those who had been negatively impacted by the hurricane Matthew. Throughout the course of the campaign, Matthew was able to raise just over $60,000 for the Samaritan’s purse organization, which helped families locate located in the Carolinas, in Haiti who were devastated by hurricane Matthew and that causes called Matthew versus Matthew. Loved and cared so much about us that he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross and to be raised from the dead in order to pay for our sins so that we could be restored back to God. This is his worldview. I’m not saying you have to agree with it. I’m just trying to point out to you that the new England Patriots win every single year for the past 20 years. And it is because bill Bellacheck knows to hire character over skill. And so this year when you watch a Patriots game gunner Oh Shefsky West Carter just bought me a gunner of Shefsky Jersey and Jason, you’ve heard me talk about him enough, but who is this guy? Oh man, division to Bemidji state. Undrafted on draft. Currently the Patriots receiver and punt returner. Oh, Shefsky Jacoby Meyers, undrafted Patriots receiver. How are we winning brick? How are the Patriots winning when they’re starting?

Left? Tackle is hurt right there. Pro bowl, a left tackle left the team for a bigger contract. They’re a pro bowl center is out for the season with blood clots. They’ve got their top receivers, two of them have left the team for bigger contracts. They’re all pro fullback is out injured, they’re all pro kicker is out injured in season and during a surgery their top linebacker is out injured their top defensive players out in injured. How are they winning? Well, I think it’s exactly what you said. It’s character over talent. I mean, these guys are talented. Don’t get me wrong. I mean, if you’re playing in the NFL, you are a talented individual. If you’re playing at a college level, you are a talented individual and each level gets that much more difficult to demonstrate the highest level of talent because only so many go on to the next level.

So you’re weeding out and you’re filtering through. So all of these guys are talented but they’re not necessarily the most talented in their position. But that character comes comes way up. Maybe I don’t understand, and maybe, maybe I’m listening right now and I’m like, what are you talking about? You, you’re not going to meet you. You’re telling me you’re not going to go in and bring in the Breck. You’re not going to hire the most talented sales guy ever to work for you. You’re going to hire some with a little less talent with more character. Really. Absolutely. You mean? You mean you’re going to bring in a guy who doesn’t have personal problems, who’s maybe less talented than a guy who has personal problems? What’s more talented? Yes. Jason or somebody out there who’s saying, I don’t believe this. Oh, absolutely.

Can you talk to me about SEO row and the amount of Mormons we have over there? We have, I know, as of right now, I think what half the team is Mormon and SEO row. Why? Because they are super diligent and they had great character. They’re forbidden from drinking alcohol. That’s true in which means they can’t ever come in hung over. And it means also, and by the way, is that a problem in business? Oh absolutely. And by the way, they all love the ones that we’ve hired. I’m not saying all Mormons are perfect people, but they absolutely love their families. And does that impact their ability to write the search engine content? It does because they don’t come in with issues at home that they’re bringing into the workplace. You know, you can’t copy content as we teach you how to get to the top of Google.

One of the things that you can never duplicate content. You can’t copy paste. Right. Jason, does character play into that at all? Yeah. Cause if I were low character and I’m like God, merit based pay means I have to write certain amount of articles, make certain amount of money. But if I don’t want to put in the, you know, the labor required to do it, I could just easily copy everything on our agenda and put it on there and be good to go. Now how do we catch people duplicating content, Jason? There are platforms that can search for duplicate content. Yup. We do active track, active track. Thrivers check it out. You use active track. And Jason, why do you think we put active track on the computers? Because you can’t trust anybody as much as you like to somebody who’s going to try to swindle you.

Yeah. The only people you can trust are the people that you can always trust. The Mormons, they think about public service and now I am not, I am not a Mormon, but I love hiring Mormons and I love hiring people with high character. Right. It just turns out right now how high, a lot of them happen to be Mormon, but I want to get into this dr Breck, if we’ve hired a low character people that were skilled, right, what would happen? Well, when they copy content, you think they were? Yeah, I mean when they may do their job very well for a time, but then if there’s a stressful event, there’s something that happens they’re more than likely to cut a corner then somebody with high character cut a corner. Well, a good example is back to Antonio Brown. Like, I don’t know much about football, but the reason that he, you know, keeps getting traded to teams is he clearly has a skill, but that’s all that people seem to care about when it comes to them.

But you look at him and he is a terrible person and the teams that keep him, I’m just telling, he’s constantly in the media for all the wrong reasons. And bill Bellacheck him, he took Josh Gordon on the team and Josh Gordon is clearly had problems with substance abuse throughout his whole career. But bill Belicheck gave him a shot. And let’s let, let’s say I’m a cynic out there. Acidic. Jason, I’m a Senator. What is a cynical person? Why do you think bill Belicheck might’ve taken on a guy who’s, you know, very talented, who has a lot of alcohol, substance abuse problems? Well, as a cynic you would say, Oh, well, you know, he’s just hiring him because he’s a good athlete. And as a person who’s seen it work time and time again, why do you think bill bill Belichick would give a guy a shot?

Who doesn’t, who, no one else has a, we’ll give a shot at this point. He believes in, again, hiring for character and training for skill. So it doesn’t matter what you can and can’t do, it’s do you have the tools within you to be able to change and to be able to follow the system and the program. So I can get you where I know you can go if you guys get a chance to look up Josh Gordon interviews or recently, I mean, if you have a soul, you’ll probably be brought to tears. It’ll bring you to tears if you have a, if you have a soul in any way at all, and you have somebody in your immediate life that’s been struggling with drugs or alcohol, you need to read this rolling stone article about Josh Gordon cause you’re going to go, Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize what this homeboy was. I mean this is, this is crazy. So Josh Gordon, okay. He talks freely and his interview that throughout his career he has taken coding, he’s drank alcohol, he has done drugs and that he basically played drunk or played high for the vast majority of, of his career. I mean, he says some stuff in his interview, we are going to go, Oh man. It’s, it’s crazy. This guy was you know, a 23 year old player who’s been suspended more than almost anybody.

He’d just been suspended. Everybody kept saying he kept getting kicked off the team and he somehow was able to stay in great shape physically, but he just was overwhelmed with just this addiction. Do you realize that he talks about in the interview how he’s playing in NFL games drunk. He was playing drone. Right? That just sounds cool. Yeah. If he can play well drunk, imagine, you know, once you sober up how much better he could play. So bill Bellacheck sat him down and let them know like, Hey dude, you need to get it together and we’re going to help you get it together. So we’re going to have accountability. We’re going to do certain things to keep you sober. Are you committed to doing this? And Josh was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so that he put his locker right next to Tom Brady [inaudible] and so Tom Brady has been his mentor and it is so cool that this dude has been sober his entire time.

That’s cool that they’re physical and so you can teach character. I’m not saying give up on someone if they have a problem in the past. I’m saying if they are choosing to continue with the problem, you got to get them off your team. You got to get them off. Coach bill. A chick also has faith in the programs that he’s put in place to help somebody in that situation. Now, Matthew Slater won’t force his faith upon you, so let me, let me read this to you. Throughout his NFL career, Matthew Slater has never been known as someone who has pushed his faith on others, rather. In fact, he has simply chosen and promise to always be available for members of the team when they need him. Longtime Patriots wide receiver and punt kickoff return specialist Julian Edelman describes Matthew Slater by saying, now Julian Edelman is the guy who was raised Catholic but is not a practicing super devout religious guy.

He says, Matthew Slater is probably the best teammate I’ve ever had. He’s the ultimate team guy who you can talk to him about anything and he can help you. He comes from a strong family. He’s a great role model for guys in the locker room. Not only, not only just kids, but also by the way he, not only with his with justice kids, but the way he lives his life. He is the real deal. Matthew Slater is a rock for the members of his team. Throughout his career, Matthew Slater has chosen to make himself available for his teammates whenever they need help or someone actually sit down with them to help teach them the playbook. This is crazy. So a new guy, they signed to the Patriots guesses, sitting down with them, teaching them the playbook. Slater, Slater, [inaudible]. Yeah, I mean, I don’t know what that’s worth. If there’s 53 roster spots, there’s a lot of talented people and apparently it’s worth a roster spot for the last 1213 years and he’s all in with his faith since his freshman year at UCLA.

You see Matthew Slater’s, faith and commitment to his faith was tested when he went off to college to attend UCLA. In fact, according to Slater, when I got to college, I’m reading Matthew Slater. Slater says, when I got to college, I really had to personalize my faith. There were some tough decisions that needed to be made. I hadn’t made all the right ones. I remember coming home and my dad really challenged me. He said, Hey, this is the time for you to become a man. When you say you want to be this kind of man, and you profess that while it’s time to start acting on it, there was a time when I had to trigger my faith. Some of that has continued to develop and will continue to develop. So his father told him, Hey, Hey, it’s okay son that you’re saying, you know you’re a Christian, but now it’s time to act like it.

Right. That’s pretty powerful. Yeah, sure. Now, Matthew Slater, I never satisfied and always looking to improve throughout his career. Matthew Slater has been known as both a player and a person who is always wanting to improve and to become the best version of himself that he can possibly be, which is good because he always, because he plays for the new England Patriots, which are always looking for ways to improve and to become a better team, so that faith really has mirrored a lot of what we see on the field as well as in the locker room where it’s, where it has had such an impact on every member of the team and every aspect of Slater’s life. Matthew Slater’s continually challenged by the lessons taught to him by his father. One might say that things came full circle this past February at the Superbowl Superbowl 53 the pats were taking on the Los Angeles Rams and Jackie’s former team, and it was also the same franchise over which the Patriots scored their first Superbowl victory in 2002 however, that game had come full circle for a different reason.

As we previously stated, his father was a Ram’s legend and Jackie’s Slater’s number 78 had just been retired by the organization. However, both the younger and elder Slaters, wherever they were, were very, you know, it’s kind of what makes them explain what’s happening. The Slater, Jackie Slater had played his entire career for the Rams and he had just had his Jersey retired for the Rams. So a huge owner. It’s a huge honor. And yet the Patriots were playing against that team during the same time they were honoring his father. So it’s like the Rams are honoring his father retiring his Jersey and Matthew’s going against his father’s longterm team. So it kind of, it’s, it’s a, a neat thing that the two, that his dad was in the spotlight for the Rams, right. Then at the same time, his son was in the spotlight playing against his dad’s former team and that, that, that, that had to be special.

It was a pretty cool time. Now performing for an audience of one, Matthew Slater often shares with the media and those who ask that heap, he says he performs just for an audience of one. Matthew is 100% sold out to the fact that his work is his worship. And the only thing that matters is that he gives 100% all the time because God is watching [inaudible]. That’s his deal. So what does Matthew Slater get paid? What do you pay a guy like this? Who’s the rock of the team, but clearly not a superstar in terms of number of catches passes, Sachs. You don’t see a lot of what he does in the, in the box score. Well, Matthew Slater is a two. He’s currently on a two year, five point $2 million contract, which includes a $1 million signing bonus and $1 million of guaranteed money. So that means that he has to earn the rest of it by actually playing.

So Matthew Slater just got at his biggest deal of his career and I just want to say is a guy who loves watching football? I am absolutely, absolutely. I’m thrilled to cheer for the Patriots and in large part, not just because of Matthew Slater, but because of the kind of person that the Patriots bring on the team that that’s, that’s what fires me up. I, I don’t really, I’m not, I don’t dislike you if you’re from the new England area, but I, I’m not a Homer to all things new England. I don’t have a bias to look geographically. I’m from the new England area, so the F Y I don’t, I don’t do that. I don’t like the Cowboys because I’m from Oklahoma. If bill Bellacheck ever left and they get off of these fundamental principles, I would switch to a different team.

I tried to find a team that best embodied these principles, but this idea of hiring character over skill is powerful women. Your appreciation for the Patriots doesn’t carry over to the red Sox. There we go. And I think, I think though a lot of us has sports fans choose our team based upon where we’re from geographically. And I’m not hating you if that’s the case, but I think it’s important for all of us to take a moment and to do a Google search for Matthew Slater. Look up this guy and look at what he look at, what he does, look at, look at how he, does it, look at the consistency with what she does. And ask yourself, are you playing? Are you performing in your business? At the level of Matthew Slater? And if I’m being honest with myself, probably not. I do a lot of things really well, but that guy is like a real, I mean the Bart star award, great husband leading the prayer meetings every week. Just a great guy. And so I thought I’d end today’s show with a few Matthew Slater quotes and I’m going to have a dr Breck break down what you think they mean to you. So this is Matthew Slater. He says, tonight, I’m so glad to be a Patriot and I’m so thankful for this experience with my teammates when he’s celebrating something, he always weaves in references to his teammates. What does that mean to you? Well, because he’s a all about

Himself. He’s about the team and again he’s, he’s got gratitude, like genuine gratitude. It’s not just in the moment a happiness. He’s got joy that that comes through and he really appreciates where he’s at.

He says here, he says, I have a lot of respect for all the teams around the league because I know how hard it is to do what we do. Again, what does that show you when you, when that guy says that? Cause again, it’s easy to go like squeaky ne hate the Raiders. I hate the way it is. Steroid is terrible. I hate the Redskins. But he ever, ever, ever, ever build a Bellacheck. By the way, bill Belichick, it’s a bill Bellacheck rule. You cannot talk negatively about the other team from the when you’re doing a press conference, you’re not allowed to complain about your team or the other team and you can’t talk negatively about the other team. Why is that so important, dr Breck?

Well, and I think with Matthew Slater, it even goes deeper because of his upbringing within the NFL and the appreciation he got from his father who’s obviously a huge mentor for him. But yeah, he appreciates that every team is trying to do with the Patriots are trying to do and that is put the best product on the field, the best team together to win, to beat the other teams. And to end up in the, in the super bowl, winning the super bowl. And everybody’s doing their best to do that same, we’re all on the same track trying to do the same thing and we may go about it a little differently, but he doesn’t undermine their efforts to accomplish the same goal. He appreciates that when we meet we’re gonna. We’re gonna really have a, a hard fought competition cause we brought our best and hopefully we come out ahead but it doesn’t discount the effort you’ve put forth.

Well let’s hear what he has to say about Antonio Brown being kicked off the teams [inaudible] some fair. Sure. Let’s see if we can catch him saying something crazy. Right. Let’s see if I can catch him

Situation. How do you, how do you make sure [inaudible] did you make sure that things stayed on point? I think you just have to try to live in the moment and operate in the moment no matter what situation that you’re faced with in life as an individual or in this case as a football team, you just control the things that you can control and try to focus on positive things and you know as a professional keep trying to do your job.

He hasn’t said anything negative about him yet. This is a guy who came on the team for a week. It was very disruptive. Got kicked off the team. We’ll continue.

I think we have always tried to do that around here. It’s been no different here. Started this season and we’ll try to continue to do that. How would you characterize Matthew, the team’s focus? We can look out. How are you guys able to do that? What you just said? Well, I think it starts with great leadership. Coach Belicheck always does a great job of making sure that our mindset is where it needs to be. And then obviously Thomas and guys that have been here for a long time and do their part in that as well. And there are so many things within this sport that you can’t control. I think it’s important to always focus on the things that you can control. Try to represent yourself and your family as best you can at all times and go out and try to do your job best she can. Are you disappointed on some level things didn’t work out with him.

Again, they’re, they’re trying to get them to say something.

You know, I, I wish him well. I wish everyone involved. Well, you know, I’m never the type of person, I wish I had a bill willing anyway. I was trying to take a positive spin on things. So

When you have a guy like this, what does that do? What does that do in your office when you have a guy like that who just continues to be positive at all time? Well, I mean, that interview right there just shows me I can trust this guy. And trust is such a huge, huge thing. In a family, in business and on a team. But yeah, I mean I’m, I’m not worried about him in any given situation, you know, if I can trust him. He’s given the opportunity here to throw Antonio Brown under the bus several times and they’re trying to get him to do that. See what happens. Now again, we talked about great leadership. Okay, so you got Matthew Slater won’t get into it right now. This is bill Bellacheck for two minutes and seven seconds being grilled about Antonio Brown. Let’s, let’s see. I already asked a sec.

No, there are questions about Antonio you know, we take all the situations with our team very seriously. And there were some things that we’re looking into, but I’m not gonna have any comment on any of the off the field situations or questions on that. So I didn’t want football at the answer. Raise hands. I’ll call on you.

He just clearly did what, what did he just do, Brock? He just clearly said he defined how this situation’s going to go. Here we go. I’m going to answer questions on a toenail. Brown. Here comes the laser show. Yep.

As far as your work with Antonio in football, duty off deal accusations, allegations complicate their ability, Pokemon feelings about him.

Yeah. When we work on football, we work on football.

Oh, changes. Talk a little bit about Antonio Brown. No. I’m going to get into that. We’re going to do what’s best for the team. Like we always do.

[Inaudible] You always say you want what’s best for the team. So how do you weigh with your players, their performance on the field with their behavior off the field and what’s best for the team?

Yeah, well it’s a big picture question. You know, we answered the best we can. There’s no set formula. How important everything’s important.

Go for it. Well, do you expect him to be Antonio?

He’s going to go off eventually. Watch him. Here he goes.

And he’s off now. I’ll think about this for a second. This is the kind of stuff, this is the Patriots wet. This is how the Patriots talk about Antonio Brown. It starts with Belicheck. It works its way down to Matthew Slater, the captain and Breck. What would happen if the players engaged in that kind of conversation? Well, I think there’s a few really positive lessons in this and part of that is that no matter what you’re doing, you’re going to have critics. And you know, I think coach bill just did a great job of demonstrating, you don’t have to answer all the critics. Like you can let the results stand for themselves and not directly have to answer every bombarding question. I mean, you can give the the truth, but not have to actually take that own it, you know, that’s, that’s them. That’s not us.

Let’s see. Yeah, I mean, if they started to engage in that, I mean, it’s one of the things we talk about in our clinic. We don’t talk about other patients. If you have an issue with another employee, and then you take it directly to them, talk about other patients, because if another patient hears you, they’re going to naturally assume you’re going to talk about them. You can have the same is going to be true with players. You could have a dramatic situation. Yeah, you could. Now here’s, here’s Tom Brady. If you’ll throw one player under the bus, why wouldn’t you throw a different one? Here’s Tom Brady asked about Antonio Brown. Let’s see if he breaks form here.

Comment at all on the Antonio Brown allegations that are out there. No other word to say. Just answer that you think it will be a distraction at all for your team going forward. I know you guys have dealt with so much through your whole career, you personally, the whole team, you’ve been through stuff like this before. I guess so how do you put it aside? I’m just trying to show up and play football and try to prepare. Miami is a good team. I get ready for them and things that don’t involve me don’t involve me. He actually take you up on your offer to live at your house? Yeah, I’m not getting into all that. So yeah. What does he do? Well, I mean, I know it’s one day, but like working with a lightweight skillset, it’s traits. Well he’s, you know, he’s very productive receiver. I think that’s you know, he’s done a lot of things in the,

There it is. It’s the Patriot way. There’s no other NFL team that can seem to figure this out. Right. Every other team loves talking about, they love talking about the other team. Now let me, let me show you the kind of character. What happens when you break form? This is what gets you kicked off the team or gets you in trouble. Do you remember the Rex Ryan scandal about the feet? [inaudible] Do you remember this? A video came out as a sex tape apparently when Rex Ryan, the coach of one of the teams was like licking his wife’s feet or something crazy. And so you remember that you do or that I remember you taking the samples of that and sending it to a podiatrist client. Yes. So this is what this is now, Wes Welker had a great career, but during an interview, this is what he said, it was asked about Rex Ryan. They were there, they were going to go play against the jets. And the reporter says, do you have any comments about Rex Ryan and how, how will that affect your team? Going in game planning and getting prepared to play against the jets who are coached by the guy who just had a sex tape come out that involved him looking his wife’s feet. And this is what Wes Welker had to say and this is why he didn’t play the next week. Here we go. Let’s get up here.

I mean, the guy is a, he is who he is and he does a great job of making sure everybody’s on the same page and, and everybody’s putting their best foot forward. Can’t just stick your toe in the water especially, you know, you get your foot up in the air wanting to go out there and just put your best foot forward. He’s got great feet, you know, he has good feet. He’s another guy who’s a great feat and you want to make sure that you know, you’re bringing your best foot forward out there. Go out there and being good little foot soldiers, you definitely have to be on your toes and, and make sure that you’re ready to go.

And so he didn’t play the next week. Why, why Breck? Cause they have a rule, you cannot talk negative Patriot ways. You cannot talk negatively about the other team. Why do you think you didn’t play the other day or play after that? After that he was a leader on the team at the time. But this is my personal opinion. There was also some other issues going on with West Welker at the time where he was then starting to bring his off field issues, his home issues into the business police. And so he slipped and we all do. And he allowed that to impact, you know, and he thought he was clever. He thought he was being cute, he was being clever and he was, I mean it was clever and it was kinda funny. It comes at a cost. There it is. [inaudible] I mean, bill Belichick is not here buddy.

It was funny though. I’ll do this. Hopefully it was very funny for you. Hope you enjoyed it. You’re sitting buddy. Hopefully you think it’s funny. Now again, Matthew Slater says this, he says, I’m very thankful and humbled for the opportunity to play here. Matthew Slater goes on to say, I’ll say this for me, football is number two. We want to see him first and foremost, doing well as an individual, doing well as a man and we want to support him however we can. We’re just going to take this one day at a time, which is all any of us can do and we’ll see what tomorrow brings and then we’ll let the day after that worry about it and when it comes around, he’s talking about a players off the field issues. This is again, he says football’s number two, right? But on off the field, how a person is matters to him more, right, and I’m just going to leave you guys with this. This thought, this nugget, this idea is as an action step today, go ahead and get out a sheet of paper

And write down on your team. Who is it? Who is the a player who brings the character and the skill. Who’s your Matthew Slater? Who is that? And who on your team is acting like an Antonio Brown. And we hope when Antonio Brown changes as a man and gets his life together, but for right now who’s acting like Antonio Brown and who’s acting like Matthew Slater. And if you have an Antonio Brown, a high talent person with a low character at this point in his life, you got to get him off your team. And if you got a guy that’s high character, you’ve got to keep them on your team, right? And sometimes it’ll cost you a little bit of skill [inaudible] of talent, but you have that character and that’s how you win over and over and over again. And Matthew Slater, if somehow through the grace, great. A worldwide web. If somebody shares this show with you, I just want to say that you are absolutely one of my favorite members of the new England Patriots.

I do love, I do love myself some Tom Brady, but I would have to say as far as Patriot players right now you’re my favorite Patriot player and I would say Tom Brady, you’re my number two. And the reason why is because you Matthew Slater don’t really ever get attention, but yet you continue to do the right thing. And Tom, I’m not discounting what you’ve done at all because you are absolutely incredible. And the stuff that Tom Brady does is unbelievable and I think it’s sometimes easier to do the right thing when you get praise for it, but when you can do something for 12 years and people are just now discovering that you scored your first touchdown last week versus the bills ever in your career when people are discovering you’ve caught just one pass your whole career, that’s the kind of self sacrifice that wows me and that most relates itself to being an entrepreneur. I think it’s that ability to just grind for years without any praise. That’s the kind of diligence I’m talking about. So big shout outs to you, Matthew Slater, and we’d like to end each and every show with a boom. So now
